Job summary

Omexom New Zealand is seeking a Technical Manager - Substations to lead technical excellence across transmission, distribution and renewable energy projects from concept through commissioning and handover.

You will guide substation maintenance, construction, commissioning and operations, while developing teams, driving safety, and ensuring high-quality outcomes. This role focuses on technical strategy, risk management and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Strong theoretical knowledge of substation systems.
• Practical experience in construction and commissioning of substation projects.
• Sound understanding of protection, control, SCADA, communications, and primary plant systems.
• Coaching and mentoring skills.
• Strategic thinking and continuous improvement mindset.

Responsibilities

• Provide technical leadership across greenfield and brownfield substation projects from concept through to commissioning and handover.
• Provide technical leadership, support, and specialist guidance to the Substation Business Units.
• Support project teams in resolving complex technical, operational, construction, protection, and control challenges.
• Provide technical input during tendering, estimating, planning, and project execution phases.
• Lead constructability reviews, technical workshops, and project technical reviews to optimise safety quality, efficiency and project outcomes.
• Build technical capability across the Substations Business Units through training, mentoring, coaching, recruitment, succession planning, and workforce development initiatives.
• Develop engineers, commissioning staff, and technical specialists to support current and future business requirements including undertaking competency assessments and development planning.
• Provide governance and technical oversight to ensure quality systems, operational procedures, technical consistency, and industry best practice are applied across all projects and field activities.
• Manage technical risks and ensure effective mitigation strategies are implemented throughout project lifecycles.
