Job summary

A&K Traffic Solutions – Wellington, North Island, seeks an STMS to train as a Trainee Traffic Management Planner. This combined role develops TMP planning and TTM design while continuing practical STMS duties in the field.

You will work toward TMP preparation, TTM design and NZGTTM fundamentals, coordinating with crews and clients to deliver safe, compliant traffic management solutions.

A&K Traffic Solutions is looking for a motivated and experienced STMS to join our team based in our Masterton office and train to become a Traffic Management Planner / Designer.
This is a combined role that provides the opportunity to develop your planning and design skills while continuing to use your practical STMS experience in the field.

About the role

Your primary development pathway will be working within the planning team as a Trainee Traffic Management Planner, receiving training and support to develop your skills in TMP preparation and TTM design. As part of the role, you will also undertake on-road STMS duties as required for A&K Traffic Solutions' operational works. This is a combined role that provides the opportunity to develop your planning and design skills while continuing to use your practical STMS experience in the field.

Key responsibilities

• Assisting with the preparation of Traffic Management Plans (TMPs)
• Preparing Traffic Management Diagrams (TMDs)
• Learning and applying NZGTTM requirements and principles
• Completing site-specific risk assessments and TTM methodologies
• Assisting with CAR applications, approvals and other planning requirements
• Using your practical STMS experience to ensure TMPs are safe, practical and workable on site
• Acting as the on-road STMS for Traffic Management operations when required
• Leading and supervising the installation, management and removal of Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) closures
• Ensuring TTM sites are installed and operated in accordance with the approved TMP and applicable requirements
• Monitoring TTM sites and making appropriate on-site decisions to maintain the safety of workers, road users and pedestrians
• Coordinating with the work crew and client while operational works are being undertaken
• Completing relevant STMS/site documentation and records

This Role is Based in Masterton so you must live in the Wairarapa prior to applying for the role.

A Combined Office & On-Road Role

This position is ideal for an STMS who wants to progress into Traffic Management Planning without completely stepping away from operational Traffic Management.
While a significant part of the role will involve learning and completing planning and design work from our Masterton office, you will also be expected to work on the road as an STMS when operational jobs are scheduled.

This may include installing TTM closures, managing the site while works are underway, supervising crews and removing the closure once works are complete.
Applicants must therefore be comfortable working in both an office planning environment and an active on-road Traffic Management environment.

• Proven practical experience installing and managing TTM sites
• Confidence leading TTM site installation, operation and removal
• Strong working knowledge of NZGTTM
• A good understanding of TTM layouts, signs, devices and site requirements
• Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to learn new systems and processes quickly
