Barkers and Max | Grafton, Auckland | Full time
Join two leading New Zealand fashion brands and help manage, improve and evolve the digital platforms behind our online retail businesses.
We are looking for a hands-on Shopify & Ecommerce Platform Specialist who understands how a modern retail eCommerce operation works. This is not a traditional Shopify developer role. While front-end Shopify development is required, the position has a much broader focus across Shopify administration, other apps, integrations, testing, troubleshooting and ongoing platform improvement.
You will add technical capacity to our internal digital team, working closely with our Group CDO, eCommerce Managers, Marketing and CRM teams, and our specialist Shopify agency, Overdose.Digital.
You will help manage the day-to-day technical operation of the Barkers and Max Shopify stores.
The role combines practical Shopify development with platform administration and eCommerce delivery. You will implement changes on site, manage Shopify apps, coordinate and test changes, troubleshoot issues, support integrations and help translate business requirements into reliable customer-facing solutions.
You will also be the internal technical counterpart to Overdose.Digital, supporting effective briefs, validating solutions, coordinating releases and ensuring knowledge remains within the business.
Managing and improving our Shopify stores, themes, configuration and supporting technology.
Completing front-end Shopify development, including theme changes, landing pages, collection templates, site functionality and reusable site components.
Implementing, configuring and administering Shopify apps.
Reviewing existing apps and identifying opportunities to improve performance, functionality or cost effectiveness.
Supporting integrations between Shopify and our wider eCommerce technology ecosystem.
Translating requirements from eCommerce, Marketing, CRM and other teams into clearly scoped technical work. Preparing briefs and acceptance criteria for agency-delivered work.
Coordinating development priorities across internal stakeholders and supporting agencies.
Conducting functional testing, regression testing and user acceptance testing before changes are released.
Managing releases, investigating bugs and coordinating issue resolution.
Supporting trading activity, campaigns, promotions and other time-sensitive retail requirements.
Identifying practical improvements to site usability, conversion, SEO, site performance and operational efficiency.
Maintaining documentation for apps, integrations, configuration and key platform processes.
This role is suited to someone who:
Has hands-on experience managing Shopify within an active retail eCommerce business.
Is comfortable moving between Shopify administration, front-end development, testing and troubleshooting.
Understands that reliable execution and day-to-day platform management are as important as writing code.
Can work directly with eCommerce and marketing stakeholders, not only technical teams.
Understands retail trading cycles, promotions, product launches and the commercial impact of website changes.
Can determine when to complete work internally and when specialist agency support is required.
Takes ownership of changes from initial requirement through to testing and release.
Practical experience managing Shopify or Shopify Plus for a retail or direct-to-consumer business.
Demonstrated experience administering Shopify themes, settings, apps and supporting services.
Experience evaluating, implementing, configuring and troubleshooting Shopify apps.
Familiarity with conversion optimisation, analytics, technical SEO, structured data and website performance.
Experience conducting QA, regression testing and user acceptance testing.
A strong understanding of online retail operations and the eCommerce customer journey.
Experience supporting promotions, campaigns and trading activity in a live retail environment.
Strong troubleshooting, documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
The ability to manage multiple priorities within a fast-moving eCommerce environment.
Online retail experience, especially in apparel or omni-channel retail experience.
Experience working with Ontempo Retail or similar retail ERP systems.
Experience with platforms such as Klaviyo, Searchspring, loyalty systems and related retail technologies.
This is not a back-end software engineering position or a role focused exclusively on development, nor is it an eCommerce Manager role. We need someone who can code front end, but enjoys being inside the Shopify platform, understands the realities of retail eCommerce and is comfortable owning the operational detail required to keep two online stores performing effectively.
If your experience is only software development, without hands-on Shopify platform management or retail eCommerce experience, this role is unlikely to be the right fit.
You will have the opportunity to work across two established New Zealand fashion brands and influence how our eCommerce platforms develop.
You will work closely with senior technology and digital leaders, experienced eCommerce teams and a specialist external agency, while building strong internal ownership of our Shopify capability.
If you enjoy combining Shopify development with practical eCommerce problem-solving and platform ownership, we would like to hear from you.
