Job summary

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is hiring a senior engineer to own the design, development and production support of payments software. You'll write Spring Boot services, help define integration patterns and build automated tests, with quality at every step.

Based in Wellington or Auckland, this hybrid role requires hands-on leadership, mentoring and collaboration with engineers, product owners and analysts to deliver robust, scalable features.

Qualifications

• Senior engineer with ownership across design, development and production support for payments software.
• Experience designing and building Spring Boot services and APIs.
• Ability to define integration patterns and contribute to automation of tests and quality strategies.
• Hybrid role with Wellington or Auckland base; three days in office and two flexible.

Responsibilities

• Design and build robust Spring Boot services and APIs (REST + SOAP) aligned to target state architecture.
• Own test strategy across unit, integration, contract, API, regression, performance and resilience testing.
• Develop and maintain automated tests and test frameworks (JUnit 5/Mockito) with production-quality mindset.
• Analyze customer needs and requirements to shape scalable, high-quality features, reproducing defects and implementing robust fixes.
• Support production and participate in on-call where needed.
• Collaborate with engineers, product owners and stakeholders; mentor junior developers and lift squad standards.
