Job summary

BNZ is hiring a Senior Developer for Payments technology in New Zealand. You will design and build Spring Boot services and REST APIs with a focus on quality, testing, and production support from first design through to live operation.

Based in Wellington or Auckland, this hybrid role offers collaboration with engineers and product owners, mentoring juniors, and delivering scalable payment systems that meet reliability and regulatory needs. Hybrid: three days in the office, two flexible.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of production backend and integration work.
• Strong Java and Spring Boot expertise.
• Experience with RESTful services and event-driven architectures (Kafka, IBM MQ).
• Experience with API testing and automation.
• Experience with PostgreSQL/SQL, Gradle, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/OpenShift, Jenkins/Spinnaker.
• Observability experience with Splunk and Dynatrace.
• Excellent written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Design and build quality solutions using Spring Boot services and APIs (REST + SOAP).
• Engineer for quality by defining test approaches (unit, integration, contract, API, regression, performance, resilience).
• Develop and maintain automated tests and test frameworks (JUnit 5/Mockito, API automation).
• Analyze, investigate, and solve problems; reproduce defects and implement robust fixes.
• Support production and participate in on-call to keep services healthy.
• Collaborate with engineers, analysts, product owners; mentor junior developers and raise squad standards.
