Bank of New Zealand is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the API and integration estate within Cards & Merchants, driving architectural direction and enterprise standards across BNZ Technology.

You will mentor API engineers, shape scalable API patterns, and embed quality by design while collaborating with Platform Owners, architecture, product, and leadership to deliver reliable, secure banking integrations.

Qualifications

• Experience with Java and Spring Boot for building enterprise-grade API services.
• Design and review RESTful APIs, API contracts, and JWT security with Kong.
• Proficient with Gradle, Docker, OpenShift and Kubernetes for deployment.
• Familiar with CI/CD pipelines: Bitbucket, Jenkins, Spinnaker.
• Experience with HashiCorp Vault for secret management.
• Knowledge of messaging: IBM MQ or Kafka and PostgreSQL/Aurora.
• Testing with JUnit, REST Assured, TestNG; end-to-end test coverage via Kong.
• Understanding cards and card/merchant data flows is beneficial.

• Mentor API engineers on design, patterns, and testing strategies.
• Resolve complex issues across API and integration platforms with structured problem-solving.
• Collaborate with Platform Owners, architecture, product, and leadership to align API priorities.
