Job summary

Halter is seeking a seasoned backend engineer to scale distributed systems that process millions of real-time messages from cattle collars and towers. You will help expand infrastructure for rapid growth and global reach, using AWS-native tools and a modern cloud stack.

You’ll own high-uptime systems, drive reliability improvements, and mentor teammates as the team evolves its protocols and infrastructure at scale. This role is based in Auckland with office-first culture.

Qualifications

• Seasoned backend engineer who scaled distributed systems in production.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred).
• Familiar with Terraform, load testing, and chaos engineering.
• Proficient in MQTT, TCP/IP, and cloud-native messaging.
• Strong debugging skills and data-driven decisions.
• Willing to own high-uptime systems.

Responsibilities

• Designing and building fault-tolerant systems that handle millions of real-time messages.
• Scaling infrastructure for device growth and global expansion using AWS-native tools.
• Continuously improving reliability, observability, and fault-tolerance across messaging and network stack.
• Lead troubleshooting cross-functional issues — partnering with firmware, hardware, and product teams.
• Owning and leading technical projects — scoping out work, designing specs, distributing tasks, and communicating progress.
• Building highly reliable automation to make deployments zero touch for customers.
• Mentoring teammates and guiding technical direction as we scale.
