Halter in Auckland is seeking a seasoned backend engineer to design and scale fault-tolerant systems that process millions of real-time messages from cattle collars and towers. You’ll help expand our infrastructure globally using AWS-native tools and lead cross-functional collaboration.

This role emphasizes reliability, observability, and automation. You’ll mentor teammates, own technical projects, and contribute to a culture that’s high-performance and office-first in Auckland.

Qualifications

• Seasoned backend engineer with production-scale distributed systems.
• Fluent in AWS or similar cloud platforms.
• Experience with Terraform, load testing, and chaos engineering.
• Comfortable with MQTT, TCP/IP and cloud-native messaging (Kinesis, SNS/SQS).

Responsibilities

• Designing and building fault-tolerant systems that handle millions of real-time messages from collars and towers
• Scaling infrastructure to support rapid device growth and global expansion using AWS-native tools
• Continuously improving reliability, observability, and fault-tolerance across our messaging and network stack
• Lead troubleshooting complex, cross-functional issues — partnering with firmware, hardware, and product teams
• Owning and leading technical projects — scoping, designing specs, distributing tasks, communicating progress
• Building highly reliable automation to deploy zero touch collar and tower deployments
• Mentoring teammates and guiding technical direction as we scale
