About The Canterbury Club

Established in 1872, The Canterbury Club is a landmark of Christchurch’s inner-city history. Situated along the Avon River, we provide a sophisticated sanctuary for our co-ed membership. With a traditional billiards room, health club, and refined dining spaces, we pride ourselves on a service standard that honours our heritage while embracing modern hospitality excellence.

We offer a rare "hospo" lifestyle: primarily Monday to Friday, closed on Public Holidays (except ANZAC Day), and nearly a full month off over the summer festive season.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced hospitality professional to lead our evening restaurant, bar, and event service. This is a hands‑on, guest‑facing role focused on elevating and setting the standard on the floor, supporting the team, and ensuring members and guests receive warm, polished, and consistent service. An interest in wine and beverages is welcome, but this is first and foremost a service leadership role.

Important Note: This is a frontline, high‑energy evening service role. You will spend approximately most of your time on the floor and behind the bar, leading normal restaurant and event service, supporting other team members, and engaging with members and guests. The role may involve light administration, including beverage list input, supplier communication, and occasional support for member bottle sales.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evening Service Leadership: Lead restaurant, bar, and event service with confidence, setting the tone for the team and ensuring smooth, professional delivery from set‑up through to close.

  • Exceptional Member and Guest Service: Deliver warm, attentive, and polished service, acting as a senior point of support for the floor team during evening trade.

  • Team Support and Mentorship: Coach junior staff in practical service standards, including hosting, table service, bar service, and confident guest interaction.

  • Event Delivery: Support the set‑up, delivery, and pack‑down of private functions, member events, and regular dining service, helping ensure each occasion runs smoothly.

  • Beverage Knowledge and Sales Support: Bring an interest in wine, spirits, and beverages where helpful, including offering recommendations when appropriate and contributing ideas for the beverage programme as time allows.

About You

You are a confident hospitality professional who enjoys leading from the floor. You take pride in calm, organised evening service, clear communication, and making members and guests feel genuinely looked after. Wine knowledge is helpful, but your strength is service leadership, reliability, and the ability to bring a team with you.

  • Service‑First Experience: Proven experience in restaurant, bar, or events service, ideally in a premium or member‑focused environment where detail and consistency matter.

  • “Host” Mentality: You are warm, professional, and confident with members and guests, with a natural ability to build rapport and create a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Evening Leadership: Comfortable being the senior anchor on the floor during busy evening services, guiding the team while remaining hands‑on and present.

  • Beverage Interest: Wine or beverage knowledge, WSET/CMS training, supplier relationships, or experience supporting beverage sales would be an advantage, but are not essential.

  • Reliability and Composure: You are organised, dependable, and calm under pressure, with the maturity to keep service standards high across restaurant, bar, and event operations.

Why Join Us?
  • Work‑Life Balance: Enjoy your weekends back and a guaranteed summer holiday.

  • Competitive Compensation: A leading hourly rate that reflects your seniority and professionalism.

  • Historic Environment: Work in one of the most beautiful and storied venues in New Zealand.

  • Practical Perks: High‑quality staff meals, professional uniforms, and great coffee provided.

Please note that applicants for this position must have NZ residency or a valid NZ work visa. A current Manager's Certificate, or obtaining one in the first 90 days, is required for this role.

Due to the number of expected applications, only those that have been shortlisted will be contacted.
