Job summary

Whitireia and WelTec in Petone (WelTec’s main campus) are seeking a dedicated tutor to support Plumbing, Drainlaying and Gasfitting learners with a strong hands-on focus.

Teaching qualifications aren’t essential at start; successful applicants will develop on-the-job and may pursue a Certificate in Adult Tertiary Teaching. Industry experience with NZ certificates and a current licence is preferred.

Qualifications

• Experience in the industry and a relevant qualification (NZ Certificate or National Certificate in Plumbing, Drainlaying or Gasfitting).
• Licensed Practitioner or Certifying qualification is preferred.
• Teaching qualifications not essential initially; support to complete a Certificate in Adult Tertiary Teaching.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate teaching, learning and assessment for Plumbing, Drainlaying and Gasfitting courses.
• Lead hands-on practical learning components for students.
• Work with students to support learning progress and assess outcomes.

Key responsibilities of this tutoring role include facilitating teaching, learning and assessment for Plumbing, Drainlaying and Gasfitting students, with courses including a strong hands-on practical learning component.

Teaching qualifications and experience are not essential for this position for you to apply, however you must possess the following qualities to ensure you have the potential to quickly grow into an effective tutor: patience, adaptability, positive attitude, good communication skills and a reasonable level of physical fitness.

To be successful, you will have experience in the industry and a relevant qualification (i.e. New Zealand Certificate or National Certificate in either Plumbing, Drainlaying or Gasfitting) and be a Licensed Practitioner or hold a Certifying qualification. Applicants with multiple licence classes will be at an advantage, but we are also interested in talking with Drainlayers and Gasfitters, as there is scope to specialize.

Successful applicants who do not already hold a teaching qualification will be supported to complete a Certificate in Adult Tertiary Teaching, or a similar tertiary teaching qualification, through on-the-job training and development. We will, of course, provide full support throughout this process.

The role is based at WelTec’s main campus in Petone. Applicants will be required to undertake a police vetting check in order to work with young people and should hold a current driver’s license.
