Job summary

NLC Payroll +MORE is seeking a Payroll Consultant to deliver high-quality payroll consulting outcomes for diverse NZ clients from Wellington. The role combines hands-on analysis, data mapping, and compliance reviews to drive efficiency and meaningful change in payroll functions.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ experience with payroll systems, payroll operations, or payroll-related project work.
  • Exposure to data migration, system implementation, or configuration (highly advantageous).
  • Strong analytical capability to identify patterns, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Excellent communication skills — translate technical detail into clear, practical advice for clients.
  • Solid understanding of NZ payroll legislation, including Holidays Act; Australian payroll knowledge is a bonus.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills and comfort with large datasets.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse payroll data to identify issues, trends, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Support end-to-end system implementations, including data mapping, testing, and validation.
  • Lead or contribute to data migrations, ensuring accuracy, structure, and integrity.
  • Conduct compliance and audit reviews, providing clear, practical insights.
  • Translate technical findings into meaningful recommendations that clients can act on.
  • Collaborate with clients, internal developers, and project teams to deliver reliable, well-designed solutions.

Our Wellington-based consulting team works with a diverse range of clients - from household names, through to mid-sized businesses navigating complex payroll challenges. The Opportunity

We are growing our consulting team and looking for a Payroll Consultant experienced in managing the technical aspects of payroll and understands what businesses need to achieve compliance, efficiency, and meaningful change within their payroll function.

Our work spans projects including legislative compliance reviews, payroll audits, system implementations, data migrations, and remediation - with real opportunities to broaden your skills and client focus.

What You'll Be Doing

You’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality consulting outcomes, this role is hands-on, analytical, and client-facing.

In this role, you will:

What We're Looking For

You’ll be a great fit if you have:

  • 2+ years’ experience working with payroll systems, payroll operations, or payroll-related project work
  • Exposure to data migration, system implementation, or configuration (highly advantageous)
  • Strong analytical capability with the ability to identify patterns, inconsistencies, and opportunities for improvement
  • Excellent communication skills — able to translate technical detail into clear, practical advice for clients
  • Solid understanding of NZ payroll legislation, including the Holidays Act (Australian payroll knowledge is a bonus)
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills and confidence working with large datasets
  • A self-driven, inquisitive mindset with a genuine interest in learning, problem-solving, and delivering great client outcomes
