Job summary

Komatsu New Zealand is seeking an experienced Leading Hand – Service to join our Greymouth team. You’ll lead a small team of five mechanics while remaining hands-on with repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment across the West Coast.

You'll spend ~60% on-site leadership and 40% planning and coordination, ensuring safe, efficient job progress and high-quality service for mining, quarry and agricultural customers.

Qualifications

• Leading Hand experience and supervisory capability.
• Trade qualification in heavy equipment preferred.
• Strong fault-finding across mechanical/hydraulic/electrical systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day technical leadership to a team of five mechanics.
• Hands-on repairs, diagnostics, servicing and maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Coordinate workshop and field service work, including planning and scheduling.
• Manage work-in-progress and close jobs to completion.
• Collaborate with customers and technicians to progress work and ensure resources are available.
• Support parts ordering and ensure technicians have necessary tools and parts.
• Coach and develop apprentices on the job.
• Promote safe, high-quality work practices and a positive team culture.

We are looking for an experienced Leading Hand – Service to join our Greymouth team.

This is a hands-on leadership role supporting a team of five mechanics and working closely with the Service Supervisor to keep day-to-day service operations running safely, efficiently and productively.

You’ll spend around 60% of your time hands-on with the team and 40% supporting leadership, planning and coordination. The role has a strong field service focus, with a mix of workshop and customer-site work across the West Coast.

Our customer base is primarily mining, with additional quarry and agricultural customers, providing a varied mix of heavy equipment service and maintenance work.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Provide day-to-day technical leadership, guidance and support to a team of five mechanics.
• Remain hands-on with repairs, diagnostics, servicing and maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Coordinate workshop and field service work, including job planning, scheduling and progress.
• Manage WIP and support jobs through to completion, including opening and closing jobs.
• Work with customers and technicians to understand requirements and keep work progressing.
• Support parts ordering and ensure technicians have the resources required to complete work.
• Provide on-the-job coaching and support to technicians and apprentices.
• Promote safe working practices, quality standards and a positive team environment.

What we’re looking for

• A trade-qualified Heavy Equipment, Automotive Diesel or similar technician, ideally NZ Level 4 or equivalent.
• Previous Leading Hand, supervisory or senior technician experience, with the ability to guide and support a team.
• Strong mechanical, hydraulic and electrical fault-finding capability.
• Experience working on heavy mobile equipment. Mining, quarry, agriculture or similar industries will be highly regarded.
• Strong communication and customer service skills, with the confidence to liaise directly with customers.
• Komatsu experience is preferred but not essential – experience with other heavy equipment OEMs will be considered.
