Job summary

The Royal Oak Hotel in Tapu, New Zealand, is seeking a Kitchen Hand & Bar Tender for a seasonal period from mid-October 2026 to the end of March 2027. You will support chefs, prep ingredients, keep the kitchen clean, and assist at the bar with drinks and customer service.

Qualifications

• Basic food handling and preparation know-how are preferred.
• Experience in customer service and bar work is useful.
• Reliability, punctuality and the ability to work under pressure are important.

Responsibilities

• Assist chefs with basic food preparation: washing, peeling, chopping and portioning ingredients.
• Maintain kitchen cleanliness, dishwashing, hygiene and waste management.
• Follow food safety standards at all times.
• Support stock management: stocking fridges, unpacking deliveries and rotating stock.
• Prepare and serve drinks at the bar: cocktails, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages.
• Engage with customers in a friendly, professional manner and answer queries.
• Handle cash and operate the POS system accurately.
• Restock bar supplies and keep the bar area neat and presentable.
• Assist with opening/closing procedures for kitchen and bar.
• Work with the team to deliver outstanding service.

The Role: Kitchen Hand & Bar Tender

This dual role offers an exciting opportunity to develop your skills both in the kitchen and behind the bar. You'll play an essential part in the smooth running of daily operations, supporting our chefs and bartenders while interacting with patrons and contributing to the overall positive energy of the venue.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist chefs with basic food preparation, including washing, peeling, chopping, and portioning ingredients
• Maintain cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen, including dishwashing, sanitising surfaces, and managing waste
• Follow food safety and hygiene standards at all times
• Support the kitchen team with stocking fridges, unpacking deliveries, and rotating stock
• Prepare and serve drinks at the bar, including cocktails, beer, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages
• Engage with customers in a friendly and professional manner, providing recommendations and answering queries
• Handle cash and operate the point-of-sale system efficiently and accurately
• Restock bar supplies and ensure that the bar area is always neat and presentable
• Assist with opening and closing procedures for both the kitchen and bar areas
• Work collaboratively with all team members to deliver outstanding service

About You

• Reliable, punctual, and able to work efficiently under pressure
• Strong communication skills and a positive attitude
• Passion for delivering excellent customer service
• Adaptable and willing to take on a variety of tasks
• Basic understanding of food handling and preparation (training provided)
• Interest in learning about beverage preparation and bar service
• Able to follow instructions and work well both independently and as part of a team
• Physical stamina to stand for extended periods and perform manual tasks
• Previous experience in hospitality is an asset, but not essential
• Eligibility to work in New Zealand
