Job summary

Hamilton City Council is seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to manage, review, and automate backup systems, patching, and related processes across on-premises and cloud environments. The role involves ensuring SLAs, monitoring infrastructure, and maintaining security and high availability.

You will support a Windows-based server environment with 150+ servers, leveraging ESX virtualization and SCCM, with opportunities to learn new skills and technologies in a collaborative team setting.

Qualifications

  • Tertiary IT qualification or equivalent experience.
  • Microsoft Azure Certified: Azure Administrator or equivalent certification.
  • Good understanding of server architectures, backup frameworks, and patch management solutions.
  • At least 3 years of experience in managing and administrating servers, networks, backup operations, and system patching.
  • Proven experience in automated patch management and backup/recovery strategies.
  • Experience with Active Directory administration.
  • Experience with SCCM for automated patch deployment and ESX virtualization.
  • Knowledge of networking, firewalls, DNS, and network configuration and support is preferred.
  • Basic scripting knowledge (PowerShell) for automating routine tasks is a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to convey technical information clearly.
  • Experience in local government is preferred.

Joining the Digital Services - Cloud & Network Team you will be working with a variety of individuals including business users, internal and external customers, application developers and project leaders with a primary focus on large-scale systems, applications, databases, and reports leveraging multiple tools, processes, and technologies.

As one of our Systems Engineers your primary responsibility will be managing, reviewing, and automating Council's backup systems, system patching, and patch management processes, alongside monitoring Council's broader IT infrastructure systems, networks, and processes. The main tasks will include ensuring that backup, recovery, and system SLA targets are met, driving automated patch deployment workflows, maintaining information security, and ensuring functional integrity, performance, capacity, and high availability.

You will oversee and manage daily activities related to infrastructure. More specifically, you will support a Windows-based server environment with more than 150 servers, including on-premises, private, and public cloud setups. You will work with ESX virtualization and SCCM and while basic scripting skills are beneficial, they are not essential. You should have knowledge and experience in troubleshooting user issues within a Windows environment, such as access problems, account issues, and using the event viewer. Additionally, you will need to have the ability to learn new skills and technologies.
