Job summary

Transpower is seeking a Protection & Automation Project Engineer in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. You will shape project scopes, review outsourced design deliverables, provide technical advice, and refine standards to support commissioning and delivery of high-voltage grid projects.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years' experience in HV Protection & Automation design, settings, implementation or related project delivery.
• Practical understanding of transmission assets, secondary systems and reliable grid operation.
• Familiarity with tools/technologies such as PowerFactory, Python, IEC 61850, DNP3, SEL, Siemens or GE platforms.
• Ability to build effective working relationships across internal and external teams and contribute to high-quality, compliant technical deliverables.
• Electrical or power engineering degree (Washington Accord accredited) or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Scoping, reviewing and supporting Protection & Automation work from concept through to commissioning.
• Investigating, modelling and assessing performance of protection schemes under various grid configurations.
• Defining practical, fit-for-purpose technical solutions with project managers, consultants and stakeholders.
• Reviewing design deliverables and contributing to scopes, cost estimates and business cases.
• Supporting updates to protection scheme settings and technical guidance.
• Sharing knowledge and contributing to engineering capability within the team.
• Evaluating new digital and networking technologies for safer, more efficient outcomes.
