Job summary

Transpower is seeking a Protection & Automation Project Engineer to help shape HV protection schemes and automation on major grid projects across Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. You’ll review scope, support commissioning, and contribute to design standards and project engineering practices.

You will work with engineers, delivery, operations and asset planning to deliver safe, reliable transmission. A Washington-Accord accredited degree is required.

Qualifications

• At least 3 years' experience in HV Protection & Automation design, settings, implementation, commissioning or related project delivery work.
• A practical understanding of transmission assets, secondary systems and reliable grid operation.
• Familiar with tools/technologies such as PowerFactory, Python, IEC 61850, DNP3, SEL, Siemens or GE platforms.
• The ability to build effective working relationships across internal and external teams and deliver compliant technical outputs.
• Electrical or power engineering degree (Washington Accord) or equivalent, with willingness to grow.

Responsibilities

• Scoping, reviewing and supporting Protection & Automation work from concept through to commissioning.
• Investigating, modelling and assessing protection scheme performance under varied grid configurations.
• Collaborating with project managers, consultants and stakeholders to define practical, fit-for-purpose solutions.
• Reviewing design deliverables and contributing to scopes, cost estimates and business cases.
• Updating protection scheme settings, technical guidance and standard packages; supporting continuous improvement.
