HSE Advisor is responsible for implementing, operating, and maintaining the client's HSE systems on a Major South Auckland construction project.

HSE Advisor works with others in a collaborative, and solutions focused manner to achieve win-win outcomes, showing visible commitment to continuous improvement in this field, always looking at how systems are being delivered to see if results are achieved in the most efficient, effective, and safe way.

The HSE Advisor must lead by example, visibly demonstrate application of the client's values, and provide day-to-day guidance, training and mentoring of project team members to drive compliance towards the client's HSE policies and procedures.

Finally, HSE Advisor must directly and indirectly contribute towards our client's determination to deliver projects safely and profitably with a view to achieving and exceeding annual net margin targets.

Key Tasks

The key responsibility for this role is to work with the project team(s) and will include the following:

Implement and maintain the client's Project Safety and Environmental Plan, ensuring its practical application across all site activities and alignment with organisational objectives.

Develop and deliver site inductions, ensuring all workers and visitors understand project-specific risks, hazards, controls, and site rules prior to commencing work.

Manage the project permit-to-work system, ensuring permits are correctly issued, reviewed, authorised, communicated, and closed out in accordance with project requirements.

Provide ongoing training and mentoring to project(s) staff on their HSE duties, fostering a culture of responsibility and continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance.

Manage the incident lifecycle, including prompt reporting, thorough investigation, and the management of corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Support the development and maintenance of emergency preparedness plans, ensuring all site personnel are aware of procedures and participate in regular drills.

Prepare and deliver clear, timely HSE reports to management, highlighting key trends, risks, and recommended actions for improvement.

Oversee the operation and maintenance of electronic HSE management systems (Safebase, Sign On Site etc), ensuring data accuracy, accessibility, and compliance with company standards.

Facilitate and support the activities of site-based HSE meetings, promoting active engagement and collaboration among committee members.

Conduct regular Subcontractor Audits, Site Inspections and Assurance Audits to monitor compliance, identify hazards and risks, and drive continual improvement in workplace safety and environmental standards.

Coordinate and facilitate drug and alcohol testing programmes, ensuring compliance with company policy and relevant legislation.

Maintain and review competency attestation systems, ensuring staff qualifications are current and relevant to assigned tasks.

Contribute to the development and delivery of Toolbox Talks, ensuring messages are relevant, engaging, and aligned with current site risks and priorities.

Monitor and maintain safety equipment, ensuring availability, serviceability, and compliance with applicable standards at all times.

Support senior HSE management by providing input into strategic initiatives, policy development, and broader organisational HSE objectives.

Undertake additional project-related HSE activities as required, adapting to evolving site needs and priorities to ensure ongoing safety and environmental compliance.

General

Comply with authority levels as per the Delegated Authorities policy.

Schedule and participate fully in regular internal and external audits to meet the client's commitment to continual improvement.

Develop an excellent understanding of all aspects of our client's internal businesses processes, procedures and policies and make recommendations for further improvement/development.

About you:

A diploma in Occupational Health and Safety and a certificate in a relevant field such as Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline is desirable.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in HSE within the construction industry.

Strong ability to conduct internal audits to verify that company HSE processes are in place, adding value, and being adhered to. Experience in ensuring legislative compliance and supporting external audits.

Proficiency in providing comprehensive training on HSE practices to ensure compliance by all staff and contractors/sub-contractors. Ability to organize and facilitate HSE training and promote internal competencies.

Expertise in incident investigations, developing appropriate corrective actions, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting of incidents. Ability to produce HSE reports and maintain up-to-date HSE reporting data.

Strong skills in building positive working relationships with project stakeholders, including construction managers, project teams, clients, and subcontractors. Ability to promote and encourage the proactive adoption of HSE protocols.
