Job description

About Us

At EGL, we strive to see beyond. We are a New Zealand based, engineer led consultancy with a strong focus on technical excellence and tackling highly complex problems.

Our projects are large; some spanning multiple decades and requiring deep technical judgment, continuity and close collaboration with clients and project partners. We have a long-term view on how we operate, including how we look after our people.

Our team brings specialist dam engineering expertise, alongside broad experience across infrastructure, water, commercial, and land development sectors. We take pride in being close to the design, owning the technical thinking, and helping shape solutions from early advice through to construction. We encourage our people to think deeply, build strong technical capability, and understand our clients' drivers so we can deliver solutions that combine technical rigour with practical judgement that endure. At EGL, learning and growth never stops.

H&S here has always been taken seriously, it's just been spread across several people rather than owned by one. We're creating this dedicated role to bring it together, give it a clear voice, and make sure it gets the visibility it deserves.

About the role

You’ll be the business’s go-to authority on health & safety, with a direct line to the SLT and a live compliance project to lead. H&S already gets done here, it's just spread across several people with no single owner. You’ll bring it together and give it the visibility it deserves.

In the near term, you’ll lead the scoping and implementation of system changes required to achieve Tōtika compliance, a priority project for the business.

This is a genuinely part-time role at approx. 16-24 hours a week to begin with, with scope to grow over time in consultation with the business. You’ll set much of your own rhythm, split your time between the office and site, and have real influence over how H&S is run and where it goes next.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Leading the scoping and implementation of system changes to achieve a recognised industry compliance and prequalification standard, a priority project in the near term
  • Keeping our H&S Policy Statement, Manual and auditing systems current, compliant and audit-ready
  • Leading review and investigation of incidents and near misses, including notifiable events
  • Representing H&S at project and management meetings, bringing a practical safety lens to how work gets delivered
  • Preparing monthly H&S reporting for management and the Board
  • Leading and supporting a network of H&S Champions who carry out day-to-day, site-level activity
  • Creating or coordinating delivery of H&S training across the business
  • Working alongside office administration on registers, templates and day-to-day recording
About you

This is a role with real scope to shape outcomes, and you’ll need to be confident operating with autonomy at a part-time capacity. Ideally, you’ll have technical or field-based industry experience, but we’re keen to hear from you if you can tick most of the following boxes:

  • NZ Diploma in Workplace Health & Safety Management or equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years' relevant H&S experience, ideally in construction, engineering or another technical, field-based industry
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015
  • Experience with compliance or prequalification schemes and exposure to ISO accreditation processes - Tōtika experience will be hugely advantageous
  • Confident developing and maintaining H&S management systems and leading incident investigations
  • Comfortable presenting H&S performance and advice at management and governance level
Please note:

To be considered for this position, you must be eligible to work in New Zealand, with valid work rights.
