Magnetic Recruitment – Hamilton, North Island

Senior HSE Advisor - Civil Infrastructure - Waikato | $110K-$140K + Vehicle + Bonus

Strong Forward Workload | Practical H&S Culture

Magnetic is supporting a well-established civil infrastructure contractor to find an experienced Senior HSE Advisor to join their Waikato team.

With a strong forward workload and some technically interesting infrastructure projects ahead, they’r‑looking for someone who enjoys being out on site, working alongside construction teams and providing practical, solutions-focused H&S support.

This is a business that wants H&S to work with its operational teams – not against them. Rather than simply telling a project team why something can't be done, you'll take the time to understand what they're trying to achieve and help find a safe, practical way to get the job done.

Our client is an established New Zealand contractor delivering civil and infrastructure projects across the upper North Island.

Their work includes water and wastewater infrastructure, pipelines, pump stations, civil structures, earthworks and multidisciplinary infrastructure projects, giving their HSE team exposure to a good variety of construction environments.

They have a strong pipeline of work ahead and a down-to-earth culture, with experienced leadership and a genuine focus on building a positive approach to health and safety.

Reporting to an experienced and well-regarded Health & Safety Manager, you'll work closely with project teams, staff and subcontractors across the Waikato region.

Hamilton would be an ideal base, but this is not an office-based H&S role. You'll predominantly be out across projects, generally within approximately 1-1.5 hours of Hamilton.

Depending on the size and complexity of upcoming projects, there may also be periods where you're predominantly supporting one major site.

You’ll be responsible for:
  • Supporting and coaching project teams to identify and manage key H&S risks
  • Providing practical advice, solutions and support to Site Managers, Foremen, engineers, crews and subcontractors
  • Spending time on live construction sites and building strong relationships with operational teams
  • Carrying out audits across procedures, behaviours and site conditions
  • Supporting risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Participating in toolbox meetings, pre-starts and site inspections
  • Supporting incident investigations and corrective actions
  • Organising and coordinating safety training
  • Helping project teams understand and meet company and legislative requirements
  • Contributing to continual improvement and a positive safety culture across the business

You’ll ideally have 5+ years' experience within Health & Safety in the New Zealand construction industry, although we're interested in talking to people with strong relevant experience who may not tick every box.

Most importantly, you'll understand how construction sites actually operate and know how to communicate effectively with the people delivering the work.

You’ll bring:
  • Construction H&S experience, ideally within civil or infrastructure projects
  • A relevant Health & Safety qualification, with NZISM Practitioner level or above preferred
  • Good knowledge of the HSWA, relevant regulations, industry guidelines and standards
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confidence working with everyone from site crews and subcontractors through to project leadership
  • A practical, open-minded and solutions-focused approach
  • The ability to challenge when necessary while bringing people along with you
  • A genuine interest in getting out onto projects rather than operating purely from behind a desk

You probably describe yourself as pragmatic, approachable and easy to work with.

What’s On Offer?
  • $110,000-$140,000, depending on experience
  • Company vehicle
  • Annual performance bonus
  • Strong forward workload
  • Technically interesting civil infrastructure projects
  • Supportive and pragmatic H&S leadership
  • Learning and development opportunities
  • A role where you'll have genuine interaction with the people delivering the work

The role generally operates around standard construction site hours, with some flexibility required to support project activities, pre-starts and toolbox meetings.

If you're a construction H&S professional who enjoys being out on site, building relationships and helping teams find safe, workable solutions, we'd love to hear from you.
