Job summary

RobLawMax Recruitment is recruiting a Heavy Diesel Mechanic for a leading Wellington fleet services team. You will maintain and repair a modern fleet across port and forestry sectors, with autonomy to get the job done right.

The role emphasises diagnosing complex faults, preventative maintenance, and mentoring an apprentice, while contributing to safety and continuous improvement. Based in Wellington, with on-site work and career development opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Recognised heavy automotive qualification (MITO or equivalent).
  • Solid experience maintaining heavy diesel machinery.
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
  • Experience with hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Commitment to quality workmanship and workplace safety.
  • Able to mentor and support junior team members.
  • Full New Zealand Driver Licence; Class 2/4 licences advantageous.
  • Available for on-call roster.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing.
  • Maintain a diverse fleet including wheel loaders, excavators and more.
  • Mentor an apprentice mechanic on-site.
  • Complete maintenance records and coordinate with operations to minimise downtime.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and uphold high safety standards.

The role:

You’ll be responsible for maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of heavy diesel equipment, ensuring maximum reliability and availability across Wellington.

Your work will include:

  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults
  • Preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing
  • Working on wheel loaders, excavators, log loaders, material handlers, terminal tractors and other specialist equipment
  • Mentoring an apprentice mechanic
  • Completing maintenance records and working closely with operations to minimise downtime
  • Contributing to continuous improvement and maintaining high safety standards

About you:

You’ll ideally have:

  • A recognised Heavy Automotive Engineering qualification (MITO or equivalent)
  • Solid experience maintaining heavy diesel machinery
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
  • Experience with hydraulic, electrical and mechanical systems
  • A commitment to quality workmanship and workplace safety
  • The ability to mentor and support junior team members
  • A full New Zealand Driver Licence
  • Class 2 and 4 licences with W, T & R endorsements (advantageous)
  • Availability to participate in an on-call roster
