Job summary

Ministry of Education in New Zealand seeks a Learning Support Specialist to provide high-quality support aligned with Te Whāriki and He Pikorua. You will collaborate with families, teachers and whānau to plan, monitor and implement intervention plans for children across early childhood and school entry.

You will join a trans-disciplinary team, support transitions from ECE to school, and apply knowledge of child development to promote equitable outcomes for ākonga in diverse settings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood) required.
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Early Intervention or ability to attain within four years.
  • Full and current NZ driver licence.
  • Minimum of three years teaching experience with knowledge of child development, learning and behaviour.
  • Understanding of a range of needs and disabilities and implications for daily life and learning.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultures acknowledging identity, language and culture as strength.
  • Ability to relate to ākonga/learners, whānau/families and kaiako/teachers across settings.
  • Understanding and application of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga.
  • Willingness to adhere to Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality learning support aligned with He Pikorua and Te Whariki frameworks.

Permanent, full-time position

  • Providing high-quality learning support in line with the Ministry's practice framework He Pikorua guiding principles, strands and goals of Te Whariki: Early Childhood Curriculum, and Te Whariki a te Kohanga Reo Building and strengthening the capability of those who are best placed to support children's learning such as parents, teachers and whānau | families
  • Understanding the families' needs, collaboratively planning, supporting and monitoring the implementation of intervention plans
  • Supporting transition points in the child's learning pathway, such as transition into early childhood education and to school, as required
  • Working as part of a trans-disciplinary team where a child's needs are complete

Salary range: from $69,966.00 - $94,558.00 per annum plusKiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

To be successful you will need:

  • A Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood)
  • A post-graduate Diploma in Specialist Teaching: Early Intervention or the ability to attain this within four years of beginning in the position
  • A full and current NZ driver licence
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience and a deep knowledge of child development, learning and behaviour
  • An understanding of a range of needs and disabilities and their implications for daily functioning in family life and for teaching and learning in the context of early childhood and family homes
  • The ability to develop and interact effectively with people of other cultures focusing on relationship and recognising their identity, language and culture as a source of strength
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with ākonga | learners, whānau | families and kaiako | teachers across a diverse range of settings
  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and tangatawhenuatanga
  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

Learning Support is a critical part of Te Mahau in Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education. We are charged with leading the education sector in ensuring that children and young people with additional learning needs are supported to achieve their full potential through education.Our Learning Support practitioners work closely with families, whānau, caregivers, schools and early childhood educators in English and Māori medium settings, and other agencies, to help maximise learning outcomes and promote social inclusion.
