Job summary

Hutt City Council’s Building Control team is seeking an experienced Senior Building Officer to deliver high-quality building code processing and provide technical leadership within the team. You will assess residential and commercial consent applications, mentor colleagues, and ensure compliance with the Building Act and NZ Building Code while delivering excellent customer service across Lower Hutt.

Qualifications

• Regulation 18 qualification in building or related field.
• Current competency at Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1–3 levels.
• Advanced knowledge of Building Act, NZ Building Code and local government frameworks.
• Strong communication and relationship management skills.
• Current clean driver’s licence.

Responsibilities

• Process residential and commercial building consent applications, including amendments, Certificates of Acceptance, and Certificates for Public Use.
• Maintain records and ensure compliance with the Building Act, NZ Building Code, and BCA Quality Management Systems.
• Provide specialist advice, technical leadership, and conduct technical audits when required.
• Mentor and support Building Officers working towards their competencies.
• Deliver a positive and efficient customer experience.
• Contribute to continuous improvement and support Council’s response to emergency events when required.

About the Role

Our Building Control team plays a vital role in ensuring safe, sustainable, and compliant development across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt. We’re seeking an experienced Senior Building Officer to deliver high-quality building code processing and provide technical leadership within the team.

• Process residential and commercial building consent applications, including amendments, Certificates of Acceptance, and Certificates for Public Use
• Maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with the Building Act, NZ Building Code, and BCA Quality Management Systems
• Provide specialist advice, technical leadership, and conduct technical audits when required
• Mentor and support Building Officers working towards their competencies
• Deliver a positive and efficient customer experience
• Contribute to continuous improvement and support Council’s response to emergency events when required

About You

You are an experienced, forward-thinking Senior Building Officer who thrives in a technical, people-focused environment and is committed to the highest standards of compliance. You will have:

• A Regulation 18 qualification in building, architecture, building science, or a related field
• Proven experience as a Building Officer with current competency at Residential 1–3 and Commercial 1–3 levels
• Advanced knowledge of the Building Act, NZ Building Code, regulations, and local government frameworks
• Strong communication and relationship management skills, with the ability to mentor others
• A customer-focused mindset, adaptability to change, and strong computer literacy
• A current clean driver’s licence
