Job summary

Christchurch City Council is seeking a Code Compliance Assessor to join the Building Compliance team in a permanent, full-time role in Christchurch.

You will assess and process applications for Code Compliance Certificates, ensuring building work complies with approved plans, the Building Act 2004, Building Code and related legislation.

Qualifications

  • Experience in Building Control/Code Compliance processes.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications and technical reports.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with evidence-based decisions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet required timeframes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication with a wide range of customers and stakeholders.
  • Collaborative approach and willingness to contribute to a high-performing team.
  • Good digital skills and proficiency with specialist systems.
  • Experience in Building Consent Authority environment is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Assess building work and supporting documentation to determine compliance with approved consent documentation and legislative requirements.
  • Make consistent, evidence-based decisions regarding the issue of Code Compliance Certificates.
  • Identify and manage risk, ensuring potential issues are addressed.
  • Work closely with building owners, agents, applicants, inspectors and other stakeholders to resolve issues and progress applications.
  • Provide clear, professional and timely advice to customers.
  • Manage workload while balancing quality, risk and processing timeframes.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure decisions are documented.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve service delivery.

Our Code Compliance Assessors play an important role in supporting the ongoing growth and development of our city.

You will assess and process applications for Code Compliance Certificates, ensuring building work has been completed in accordance with the approved plans, the Building Act 2004, Building Code and other relevant legislation and requirements.

This is a role that requires sound judgement, attention to detail and the ability to assess information, identify risk and make well-reasoned decisions.

You will:

  • Assess building work and supporting documentation to determine compliance with approved consent documentation and legislative requirements.
  • Make consistent, evidence-based decisions regarding the issue of Code Compliance Certificates.
  • Identify and manage risk, ensuring potential issues are appropriately considered and addressed.
  • Work closely with building owners, agents, applicants, inspectors and other stakeholders to resolve issues and progress applications.
  • Provide clear, professional and timely advice to customers.
  • Manage your own workload while balancing quality, risk and processing timeframes.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure decisions are appropriately documented.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that improve the way we deliver our services.

We're looking for someone who is confident, curious and enjoys working in a busy environment where quality and consistency matter.

You will have:

  • A sound understanding of the building industry and construction processes.
  • The ability to interpret plans, specifications, reports and other technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions based on evidence.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and work effectively within required timeframes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the confidence to work with a wide range of customers and stakeholders.
  • A positive, collaborative approach and a willingness to contribute to a high-performing team.
  • Good digital and technical skills, with the ability to learn and confidently use specialist systems.
  • Previous experience working within a Building Consent Authorityenvironment would be an advantage.

Relevant qualifications or experience in areas such as Building Control Surveying, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Project Management or the building and construction trades will also be considered favourably.

  • Hours of work - Permanent Fulltime Position
  • Position - 37.5 - 40 hours per week
  • Location - This position is primarily based at 53 Hereford Street, Christchurch
  • Salary-The salary band for this position goes from $67,735 - $75,510 per annum based on a 40 hour week. Starting salaries will be based on knowledge, skills and experience the successful candidate brings to the role, and relativities both, within the immediate team and in the broader organisation for the same or similar roles.
