Job summary

ASB Bank in Auckland seeks a Chapter Lead to lead two host squads focused on Financial Transaction Processing and the Unisys platform. You will provide technical and people leadership, build reusable components, and guide engineering practices across squads.

You will balance delivery with reliability, coach teams, and engage stakeholders to align velocity with safety and governance.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in software engineering and leading development teams.
• Proven experience leading engineers in a people leadership role such as Chapter Lead, Engineering Manager, or Technical Lead.
• Experience with COBOL and/or .NET/C# will be beneficial.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD, automation patching, and cloud/on-prem environments (Windows & Linux).
• Understanding of reliability, observability, incident response, server operations.
• Agile delivery and user story refinement.
• Strong technical documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead & inspire a Chapter of a large reporting group, delivering reusable integration components and reference architectures.
• Coach & develop high-performing engineering teams and establish best practices for design reviews, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Engage stakeholders to balance velocity with safety and communicate trade-offs clearly.
• Define technical standards, tooling, policies, and guardrails for the Chapter.
• Foster a strong developer community and iterate on shared tools to maximize reuse and developer experience.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

Join our Core Tribe as a Chapter Lead and help our 2 Host squads, one that focuses on Financial Transaction Processing and the other that looks after the underlying Unisys platform and infrastructure.

You will play a key role in enabling seamless, scalable, and secure integration by building reusable components and supporting engineering practices across squads.

• Lead & Inspire: Provide technical and people leadership to a Chapter of a large reporting group, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth. Lead delivery of reusable integration components and reference architectures and provide hands‑on guidance for complex implementations.
• Coach & Develop: Build and mentor high‑performing engineering teams, establish best practices in design reviews, incident response, and continuous improvement.
• Empower Growth: Support Chapter members in sourcing feedback, setting personalized goals, and crafting development plans.
• Technical leadership (Development): Able to provide hands‑on guidance or technical leadership to engineers working on COBOL
• Technical leadership (SRE):Experience with repeatable automation using tools like PowerShell, Python, Ansible, pipelines, dashboards, and self‑service patterns. Comfortable around patching SLAs, exception management, risk acceptance, prioritisation, and evidence‑based reporting.
• Set Standards: Define technical standards, tooling, policies, and guardrails for your Chapter.
• Stakeholder Engagement:Engage stakeholders (product, security, ops) to balance velocity with safety, communicate trade‑offs and decisions clearly.Stay Connected: Foster a strong developer community, run forums, gather feedback, and iterate on shared tools to
• maximize reuse and developer experience.
• Workforce Planning: Balance Chapter capability and capacity with business needs, source and hire top talent as required.

You are an experienced people leader with a strong development background. You have led engineers in complex environments and are comfortable balancing coaching, performance management, and technical leadership. You understand that your role is not to be the deepest specialist, but to be technically credible, supportive, and clear in your expectations.

What you bring

Experience

• 10+ years in software engineering and leading development teams.
• Proven experience leading engineers in a people leadership role, such as Chapter Lead, Engineering Manager, or Technical Lead with direct reports.
• Experience with 1:1’s, End of year discussions, performance management.
• Experience with COBOL and/or with .NET / C# will be beneficial.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD, automation patching, and cloud/on-prem environments (Windows & Linux servers)..
• Understanding of reliability, observability, incident response, server operations.
• Agile delivery and user story refinement.
• Strong technical documentation skills.
