Job summary

Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu is seeking a reliable Café Assistant for its Christchurch location. The role covers daily café operations, customer service, and maintaining a welcoming environment. No formal qualifications required and the position is rostered across Monday to Sunday with a minimum 30 hours per week.

Pay is NZD 25–30 per hour, with a full-time schedule. The candidate should be willing to learn, work as part of a team, and meet basic food safety and hygiene standards.

Qualifications

• No formal qualifications or previous work experience required.
• Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
• Good communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team.
• Must be willing to undergo a pre-employment drug test, if required by the employer.
• Must be willing to undergo a Ministry of Justice criminal record check, if required by the employer.

Responsibilities

• Greet customers and take food and beverage orders.
• Serve food and drinks to customers.
• Prepare basic food items, tea, coffee and other beverages.
• Clear tables and keep the café clean and tidy.
• Wash dishes, utensils and kitchen equipment.
• Assist with food preparation and restocking supplies.
• Handle customer payments and operate the till.
• Maintain food hygiene, cleanliness and health and safety standards.
• Refill displays, fridges and other service areas as required.
• Assist other café staff with daily operations.
• Provide friendly customer service and respond to customer enquiries.
• Dispose of rubbish and maintain a clean and organised work environment.
