Job summary

Higgins is seeking an experienced Class 5 Driver for a specialist bitumen tanker role in the North Island. The fixed-term position runs from 1 September 2026 to 25 March 2027, with potential extension based on workload.

You will operate an 8 x 4 Hino 700 tractor unit and 4-axle tanker, working with site crews to keep projects safe and on schedule. Training to gain licences is provided.

Qualifications

• Class 5 licence with DG endorsement (support to gain this).
• Experience driving Road Ranger and automatic gearboxes.
• At least 2 years in line haul or similar heavy transport work.
• Bulk liquid or dynamic load experience is an advantage.
• Experience handling hazardous or temperature-controlled products is an advantage.
• Proficiency with phones/tablets for reporting and job tracking, including electronic logbooks.

Responsibilities

• Operate bulk tanker vehicles to transport and deliver bitumen products.
• Manage heating, pumping and transfer systems for safe handling.
• Carry out pre-start checks, calibrations and daily inspections.
• Complete deliveries efficiently while meeting compliance requirements.
• Maintain accurate logbooks and delivery records.
• Coordinate timing with site crews to meet project requirements.

Job description

We're looking for an experienced Class 5 Driver to join our Silverdale team in a specialist bitumen tanker role. This is a hands-on role where you'll be responsible for transporting and handling bitumen products across the North Island,

This is a fixed-term role starting 1 September 2026 through to 25 March 2027, with the potential to extend depending on workload.

You'll be operating an 8 x 4 Hino 700 tractor unit with an 18 speed Road Ranger gear box and a 4-axle quad semi bitumen tanker - 48 tonne GCM, working closely with site crews to keep projects running safely and on time.

What You'll Be Doing

• Operate bulk tanker vehicles to transport and deliver bitumen products
• Manage heating, pumping and transfer systems for safe and correct handling
• Carry out pre-start checks, calibrations and daily inspections
• Complete deliveries efficiently while meeting compliance requirements
• Maintain accurate logbooks, delivery records and documentation
• Work closely with crews to coordinate timing and site requirements

What You'll Bring To The Role

• Class 5 licence, with Dangerous Goods endorsement (we can support you to gain this)
• Experience driving Road Ranger and automatic gearboxes
• At least 2 years' experience in line haul or similar heavy transport work
• Bulk liquid or dynamic load experience is an advantage
• Experience handling hazardous or temperature-controlled products is an advantage
• Confidence using phones and tablets for reporting and job tracking, electronic logbooks and prestarts
• Strong understanding of transport safety and compliance requirements
• Comfortable working independently and managing your time
• Flexibility for occasional weekend and overnight work
