Job summary

Connect NZ seeks an experienced Audio Visual Engineer to join our Christchurch team. This hands‑on role covers installation, commissioning and on-site delivery across corporate, government and education environments with travel across New Zealand.

You will mentor technicians, read AV drawings and ensure safety and quality. A full NZ driver’s license is essential; some projects may require extended stays. Ongoing training and professional development are provided.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional AV installation and commissioning experience.
• Hands-on installation skills and pride in workmanship.
• Experience commissioning integrated AV systems.
• Fault-finding and troubleshooting capability.
• Understanding AV-over-IP, IP addressing, VLANs, multicast and QoS.
• Ability to read technical drawings and site plans.
• Experience leading onsite installation teams.
• Willingness to travel across New Zealand.
• Visio, AutoCAD or D-Tools experience is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Install, configure and commission professional AV systems.
• Install displays, projectors, cameras, microphones and speakers.
• Build AV racks to a high standard.
• Terminate and test low-voltage cabling (CAT6/AV).
• Set up Teams Rooms, Zoom and Webex collaboration systems.
• Commission control, audio DSP and AV-over-IP systems.
• Test systems and troubleshoot issues.
• Maintain cable management and workmanship.
• Complete commissioning records and project docs.
• Read AV drawings and site plans; coordinate with Project Managers.
• Lead onsite installation activities and mentor junior technicians.
• Identify risks and escalate appropriately.
• Conduct customer handovers, demos and end-user training.
• Ensure safety and health & safety compliance.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Audio Visual Engineer to join our Christchurch team.

This is a hands‑on role for an experienced AV professional who can take ownership of installations, commissioning and onsite technical delivery. You will work across corporate, government and education environments, delivering high‑quality AV and collaboration solutions throughout New Zealand.

You will also play an important role in supporting and mentoring other technicians, working closely with Project Managers and maintaining strong communication with our customers.

This is a national role requiring regular travel across New Zealand, including occasional extended out‑of‑town deployments. A full, clean New Zealand driver's license is essential.

What You'll Be Doing

You will take a hands‑on role in the installation, commissioning and delivery of AV projects.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Installing, configuring and commissioning professional AV systems
• Installing displays, projectors, cameras, microphones, speakers and associated AV equipment
• Building and completing AV racks to a high standard
• Installing, terminating, testing and labelling low‑voltage cabling including CAT6 and audio cabling
• Setting up video conferencing and collaboration systems including Microsoft Teams Rooms, Zoom and Webex
• Commissioning control, audio DSP and AV‑over‑IP systems
• Testing completed systems and fault‑finding technical issues
• Maintaining high standards of cable management, labelling and installation workmanship
• Completing commissioning records, test results and project documentation
• Reading and working from AV drawings, schematics, site plans and project documentation
• Coordinating onsite activities with Project Managers, customers and other trades
• Leading onsite installation activities where required
• Supporting and mentoring junior technicians
• Identifying technical or site risks early and escalating them appropriately
• Completing customer handovers, system demonstrations and end‑user training
• Ensuring work is completed safely and in accordance with site and Connect NZ health and safety requirements
• Travelling throughout New Zealand to support project delivery when required

What We're Looking For

We are looking for an experienced AV Engineer who understands what good AV delivery looks like and can take responsibility for their work from installation through to commissioning and handover.

You may be a good fit if you have:

• Around 5+ years of professional AV installation and commissioning experience
• Strong hands‑on installation skills and pride in workmanship
• Experience commissioning integrated AV systems
• Strong AV fault‑finding and troubleshooting capability
• A practical understanding of AV‑over‑IP and networking fundamentals including IP addressing, VLANs, multicast and QoS
• The ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics and site plans
• Experience leading or coordinating small‑to‑medium onsite installation teams
• Good time management and the ability to manage competing site priorities
• Strong communication skills with customers, Project Managers, IT teams and other trades
• A professional approach when working on customer sites
• The ability to work independently while also contributing to the wider engineering team
• A willingness and ability to travel regularly throughout New Zealand

Experience with Visio, AutoCAD or D‑Tools would be advantageous but is not essential.

You don't need to be an expert across every platform. We are more interested in strong AV fundamentals, proven hands‑on experience and the ability to learn and adapt.

Qualifications That Would Be Valuable

The following qualifications and training would be advantageous:

• Crestron, Q‑SYS, Biamp, Extron or AMX manufacturer training
• AVIXA CTS or equivalent AV industry certification
• Site Safe or equivalent health and safety training
• Networking qualifications such as CompTIA Network+ or CCNA
• Experience delivering government or enterprise AV projects
• Ability to obtain or hold a government security clearance
