Job summary

SGS, a global engineering company in New Zealand's geothermal sector, is seeking an experienced ASME Welder to join our growing team.

You will interpret drawings, fabricate and weld per ASME codes, perform inspections, and help ensure quality, safety and traceability across projects in geothermal and energy sectors.

Qualifications

  • Valid ASME IX certification to 6G or equivalent.
  • Proven welder in industrial, manufacturing, energy, or heavy engineering environments.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME codes, particularly Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Experience reading drawings and welding specifications.
  • Experience with mechanical fitting, assembly and installation.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret drawings, blueprints and welding specs to guide fabrication.
  • Fabricate, assemble, fit and weld components per project requirements.
  • Conduct pre-work inspections of materials and equipment for safety.
  • Perform precision QC checks and measurements to meet tolerances.
  • Maintain welding procedures records for traceability.
  • Identify defects and support corrective actions.
  • Operate and maintain welding and fabrication equipment safely.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to meet production schedules while ensuring quality.
  • Adhere to health, safety, environmental and quality requirements.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of welding processes.

Job Description

What you will be doing:

In this role, you'll be responsible for delivering high-quality welding work in accordance with ASME codes and standards. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Interpreting technical drawings, blueprints, fabrication plans, and welding specifications to ensure accurate fabrication and assembly.
  • Fabricating, assembling, fitting, and welding components in accordance with project requirements and relevant standards.
  • Conducting pre-work inspections of materials, equipment, and work areas to verify readiness and safety.
  • Performing quality control checks and measurements using precision tools to ensure completed work meets specified tolerances and quality requirements.
  • Maintaining detailed records of welding procedures, inspections, and test results to support traceability and compliance.
  • Identifying and reporting defects or non-conformities and assisting with corrective actions.
  • Operating and maintaining welding and fabrication equipment, ensuring it remains in safe working condition.
  • Working collaboratively with supervisors and colleagues to meet production schedules while maintaining quality standards.
  • Adhering to all health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives through feedback and recommendations on fabrication and welding processes.

Qualifications

What You'll Need

  • Valid ASME IX certification to 6G or an equivalent welding qualification.
  • Proven experience as aWelder in industrial, manufacturing, energy, or heavy engineering environments.
  • Strong knowledge of ASME codes and standards, particularly the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.
  • Experience with a variety of welding processes and fabrication techniques.
  • The ability to read and interpret technical drawings, fabrication plans and welding specifications.
  • Experience with mechanical fitting, assembly and installation activities.

Skills and Knowledge, We're Looking For

  • Sound understanding of metallurgy and material behaviour.
  • Experience using precision measuring equipment and quality control procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate documentation.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a team.
