Job summary

The Treasury Te Tai Ōhanga in Wellington is seeking two Modelling Specialists at Analyst level to contribute to the Treasury's modelling, data, and analytical capability. This hands-on role involves solving complex problems and applying quantitative methods to policy-relevant questions across economics, forecasting, microdata analysis and more.

You will collaborate with Treasury colleagues and external experts to produce robust analyses that inform Ministers and decision-makers, with prospects

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in economics, econometrics, statistics, mathematics, or another quantitative discipline.
  • Experience applying quantitative methods to policy-relevant problems.
  • Experience with data, models, analytical tools and code.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to modelling, data analysis, forecasting, or applied policy analysis.
  • Develop analytical tools and improve analytical processes and tooling.

About the team

Analytics, Insights, and Modelling (AIM) team is the Treasury’s centre of excellence for quantitative economic analysis and modelling. The team works across a range of modelling and analytical disciplines, including economic modelling, forecasting, microdata analysis, and quantitative research. The team works closely with policy colleagues, forecasters, and external experts to ensure analytical work is technically robust and directly relevant to New Zealand’s most important economic challenges. AIM values intellectual rigour, collaboration, and curiosity. About the Role

We are seeking two Modelling Specialists at the Analyst level to contribute to the Treasury's modelling, data, and analytical capability. This is a hands‑on analytical role for people who enjoy solving complex problems and applying quantitative methods to policy‑relevant questions. Depending on priorities, you may contribute to a range of projects including economic modelling, microdata analysis, forecasting, or applied policy analysis. You may also contribute to developing analytical tools, improving analytical processes, and supporting the adoption of new approaches and technologies that enhance the quality and efficiency of analysis. You will work closely with colleagues across Treasury to develop evidence, insights, and analytical products that help inform advice to Ministers and decision‑makers.

  • These are permanent, full‑time positions (40 hours per week) based in Wellington, New Zealand.
  • Depending on priorities, you may contribute to a range of projects including economic modelling, microdata analysis, forecasting, or applied policy analysis.
  • You may also contribute to developing analytical tools, improving analytical processes, and supporting the adoption of new approaches and technologies that enhance the quality and efficiency of analysis.

Base salary ranges for these roles are as follows: Analyst – Modelling Specialist: $90,693.30 to $122,702.70. Appointments will be made based on the successful candidate’s skills, experience, and alignment with the requirements of the role.

About You

You are a curious and capable analyst who enjoys using quantitative methods, data, modelling, or technology to solve complex problems and apply them to policy‑relevant work. To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A tertiary qualification in economics, econometrics, statistics, mathematics, or another discipline that has provided you with strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply your skills to solve real‑world problems.
  • Experience working with data, models, analytical tools, and code.
  • Strong problem‑solving, data manipulation, and analytical skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate complex analysis clearly to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
  • We would be particularly interested in candidates with experience applying AI, automation, or other emerging analytical tools to support modelling, analysis, and evidence‑based advice.
  • Be adaptable and comfortable working in a fast‑paced policy environment.
