Job summary

The Treasury of New Zealand – Te Tai Ōhanga, Wellington or Auckland-based, seeks an Assistant Treasury Accountant for the NZDM division on a permanent basis. You will focus on delivering accurate financial accounting and timely management reporting to support decision-making.

You will prepare monthly/annual Crown Fiscal reporting, advise on Treasury disclosures, and coordinate with third-party providers to ensure tax compliance.

  • CAANZ membership or actively working towards it.
  • Experience accounting for financial instruments.
  • Understanding of risk management principles for financial instruments.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively with people from a range of technical backgrounds.
  • Strong organisational and prioritisation skills, with the ability to work independently and self-manage.
  • Demonstrates high standards of professional conduct, integrity, and ethical practice.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the delivery of management and financial accounting for NZDM activities.
  • Produce timely, accurate management reporting to support decision-making.
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial reporting data for Crown Fiscal Reporting.
  • Provide advice on NZDM financial disclosures for Treasury reporting.
  • Work with third-party providers to maintain accurate financial records and meet tax requirements.
  • Provide first-level technical accounting advice on Treasury products and NZDM activities.
  • Ensure key operational controls are completed and remain effective.
  • Support the continuous improvement of NZDM accounting systems, controls, and processes.
  • Contribute within the Accounting and Settlement teams responsible for the provision of quality settlement processes for NZDM and Treasury transactions.
  • Contribute to accounting and settlement projects as required including developing accounting requirements and determining testing plans.

The New Zealand Debt Management (NZDM) division interacts closely with global financial markets. It is responsible for executing the Government's borrowing requirements and providing financial market expertise to the wider Crown. NZDM also contributes to the conduct of sustainable and stable fiscal policy. The debt programme provides the critical sovereign benchmark that supports the functioning of New Zealand’s financial markets.

We are looking to recruit for an Assistant Treasury Accountantin the New Zealand Debt Management (NZDM) division on a permanent basis.

In this role you will:
  • Contribute to the delivery of management and financial accounting for NZDM activities.

The base salary range for this role is band 15F: $80,496– $100,745.
