Job summary

Your People Recruitment in Dunedin, South Island, is seeking an Accounting Technician/Assistant Accountant to join a busy team. You will process journals, support month-end activities, and assist with reconciliations in a large organisation.

Ideal candidates have a foundation in accounting principles, strong numerical skills, and proficiency with Excel. You will work with experienced accountants and gain exposure across a broad range of finance tasks.

Qualifications

• A recognised accounting qualification, or progress toward one, is preferred.
• Experience in journals and reconciliations is desirable.
• Strong numerical and analytical abilities with attention to accuracy.
• Good communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Preparing and entering journals into the financial system
• Gathering and preparing financial information for monthly reporting
• Assisting the accountants with month-end processes
• Completing general ledger and balance-sheet reconciliations
• Investigating and resolving financial discrepancies
• Accurately entering data and maintaining accurate financial records
• Assisting with reporting, audits and other accounting requirements
• Providing general support to the wider accounting team

This is a hands‑on role supporting the accounting team with accurate financial processing, month-end reporting and a range of general accounting activities. You will work closely with experienced accountants and gain valuable exposure across a sizeable and complex organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Preparing and entering journals into the financial system
• Gathering and preparing financial information for monthly reporting
• Assisting the accountants with month-end processes
• Completing general ledger and balance-sheet reconciliations
• Investigating and resolving financial discrepancies
• Accurately entering data and maintaining accurate financial records
• Assisting with reporting, audits and other accounting requirements
• Providing general support to the wider accounting team

You will have previous experience in an Accounting Technician, Assistant Accountant, Senior Office Administrator or similar finance support role. You will also bring:

• Sound knowledge of accounting principles and processes
• Experience preparing journals and completing reconciliations
• Strong numerical and analytical skills
• Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
• Confidence using financial systems and Microsoft Excel
• The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach
• A relevant accounting qualification, or progress toward one, would be advantageous.
