About the Role
We are looking for a capable and detail-oriented Accountant to join our professional team in Auckland. This is a permanent, full-time position based in Mt Eden, Auckland, with 30–40 hours of work per week.
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing accounting, financial reporting, tax compliance and client accounting services to our portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses, self-employed clients, property investors and other business clients, while also contributing to financial analysis and advisory work.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare financial statements, annual accounts, management reports and other financial reports for the firm's business and individual clients in accordance with applicable accounting and reporting requirements.
- Examine and analyse clients' income, expenditure, assets, liabilities and accounting records, and investigate discrepancies or unusual transactions to ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial information.
- Prepare GST returns, income tax returns and related tax calculations and schedules, and assist clients in meeting their New Zealand tax and IRD compliance obligations.
- Review and reconcile general ledgers, bank accounts, accounts receivable, accounts payable and other balance sheet accounts, and make or recommend appropriate accounting adjustments where required.
- Set up, maintain and review client accounting systems and accounting records, including computer-based accounting systems, and advise clients on appropriate accounting processes and record-keeping practices.
- Review payroll records and PAYE information and assist with payroll-related accounting and compliance matters for clients.
- Maintain and review internal accounting controls and identify accounting, record-keeping or compliance issues, recommending practical improvements where appropriate.
- Assist with IRD reviews, queries and audit-related matters by analysing accounting records, preparing reconciliations and schedules, and compiling supporting financial information.
- Analyse clients' financial performance, cash flow, costs and financial position, and provide accounting and financial advice to support business planning, structuring and operational decision-making.
- Liaise directly with clients to obtain and clarify financial information, explain accounting and tax matters, follow up outstanding documentation, and ensure accounting and compliance work is completed accurately and within required deadlines.
Requirements
- A bachelor's degree or higher qualification in Accounting, or a closely related discipline with substantial accounting content.
- At least one year of relevant experience involving accounting, financial reporting, audit, internal controls, accounting systems or financial analysis. Relevant accounting-focused academic or professional work may be considered where it demonstrates practical application of accounting knowledge.
- Sound knowledge of financial accounting, financial reporting, taxation and accounting information systems.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills with the ability to review financial records, identify discrepancies and interpret financial information.
- High attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple client files and compliance deadlines accurately.
- Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to explain accounting and financial matters clearly to clients.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a professional accounting team.
