Job summary

Toptal is seeking a Lead Technical Architect to own the architecture and end-to-end delivery of a SAP S/4HANA migration program. Based in Oslo with 2–3 days onsite, you will define the migration roadmap, assess the ECC landscape, and lead technical workstreams across integrations, custom code, and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Job description

A global Agro Tech company is undertaking a major enterprise transformation: migrating its SAP ERP landscape to S/4HANA. They're looking for a Lead Technical Architect to own the technical architecture and execution of that program end to end.

This is the senior technical seat on the program. You'll define the migration architecture and roadmap, assess and de-risk the existing ECC landscape, lead the technical workstreams through every conversion cycle, and make the calls on integrations, custom code, infrastructure, and cutover. You'll work directly with the ERP Director and senior stakeholders, and you'll be the technical authority that functional teams, infrastructure teams, and implementation partners align around.

The role is based in Oslo, with 2–3 days per week onsite at the client's office.

What You'll Do

Architecture and strategy

• Define the end-to-end technical architecture and migration roadmap for the S/4HANA transformation program
• Develop technical design documents, implementation standards, architectural guidelines, and migration governance practices
• Establish technical governance, quality controls, technical checkpoints, and migration quality gates
• Identify technical risks and define mitigation plans throughout program execution

Landscape assessment and integration readiness

• Assess the existing SAP ECC landscape and document integrations, dependencies, interfaces, data flows, and migration risks
• Lead technical impact assessments for ECC-to-S/4HANA changes across integrations, middleware, APIs, custom developments, and third-party applications
• Define remediation strategies and coordinate integration readiness with application owners, business stakeholders, integration teams, and external vendors
• Ensure business-critical integrations continue functioning post-conversion through testing, validation, and cutover planning
• Lead SAP custom code assessments using simplification items, ATC checks, and custom code analysis tools
• Define and govern the strategy for ABAP adaptation, obsolete-code decommissioning, and adoption of S/4HANA development practices
• Coordinate remediation, testing, and deployment of custom SAP objects impacted by the conversion
• Lead technical migration activities using SUM with DMO and other SAP-recommended methodologies
• Support sandbox, development, quality, dress rehearsal, and production migration cycles
• Review system readiness, infrastructure sizing, performance, downtime optimization, and cutover procedures
• Troubleshoot SAP Basis, HANA, ABAP, integration, and S/4HANA conversion issues
• Guide system refreshes, transport management, retrofit processes, environment strategy, and production stabilization
• Support testing cycles, cutover readiness assessments, performance optimization, monitoring, and capacity planning

What You Bring

• 10+ years of SAP technical experience, including at least 5 years focused on S/4HANA transformations
• A track record leading large-scale ERP and S/4HANA migration programs
• Strong expertise defining end-to-end S/4HANA technical architecture and migration strategies
• Deep SAP Basis and SAP system administration experience
• Strong knowledge of SAP HANA database architecture
• SAP ABAP experience, including custom code assessment, remediation, and modernization for S/4HANA
• Strong experience assessing and managing SAP integrations, interfaces, APIs, middleware platforms, and connected third-party applications
• Experience with SAP Fiori architecture
• Hands-on experience with Software Update Manager (SUM) and Database Migration Option (DMO)
• Experience across migration planning, system readiness, performance optimization, downtime reduction, and cutover
• Experience with SAP security, transport management, release processes, system refreshes, and environment strategy
• Experience designing highly available, scalable, and secure SAP environments
• Experience working with Azure infrastructure and cloud platforms
• Experience establishing technical governance, architectural standards, and migration quality gates
