Job summary

The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in atmospheric physics. The appointment is for 3 years with a possible 4th year for teaching or other duties.

The project RAPTURE aims to predict extreme rainfall using high-resolution simulations and machine learning. You will join the Geophysical Institute and contribute to climate hazards research across Europe, with opportunities to publish and present internationally.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in physics, meteorology, mathematics, computer science or related field.
  • Master's degree must be awarded; submission is acceptable for assessment before deadline.
  • Strong mathematical and quantitative skills required.
  • Interest or experience in meteorology is advantageous.
  • Python programming is advantageous.
  • Geospatial data analysis experience is advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and in a structured, collaborative way.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Responsibilities

  • Work on simulating extreme rainfall properties and dangers within RAPTURE.
  • Use high-resolution regional climate simulations to study processes.
  • Investigate physically-grounded vs. machine-learning climate projections.
  • Prepare and publish scientific papers; participate in workshops and conferences.
  • Develop qualifications to support future careers in academia or industry.
