Job summary

NTNU in Ålesund invites applications for a PhD Candidate in trustworthy agentic artificial intelligence, part of the Norwegian Maritime AI Center. The research spans AI, autonomy and maritime technology with collaboration across industry and academia.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in CS/AI or related fields and meet NTNU admission requirements for Engineering Cybernetics. Strong Python and ML experience required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, engineering cybernetics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or equivalent; 120 credits at master level.
  • Strong programming skills, in particular Python, and practical experience with modern machine learning frameworks.
  • Must meet admission to NTNU’s doctoral programme in Engineering Cybernetics.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on trustworthy agentic AI with open-weight foundation models, architectures, reasoning, planning and tool use.
  • Develop methods for reliable and accountable agent behavior, including uncertainty quantification and interpretability.
  • Validate methods on maritime and safety-relevant case studies in collaboration with the Maritime AI Center and partners.
  • Publish research findings and participate in CPS Lab and Maritime AI Centre activities.
  • Take courses totaling at least 30 ECTS.
