ING is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with a strong frontend background and an interest in AI to join the Frontend Foundation Web domain in Amsterdam.

You will work on an AI-focused pilot exploring how AI can become part of the frontend development lifecycle and how AI agents can perform software engineering tasks.

What if your frontend work didn't just impact one application, but helped shape how engineers across ING build, test and deploy frontend applications?

For ING, we are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a strong frontend background and an interest in AI to join a specialised engineering team within ING's Frontend Foundation Web domain.

You will join a senior engineering team working on an AI-focused pilot , exploring how AI can become an integral part of the frontend development lifecycle. The team consists entirely of experienced ING engineers, working closely together to build and test new solutions in practice.

And there is another important dimension to the role: AI .

The team is exploring how AI agents can perform software engineering tasks and how these solutions can be integrated safely and sustainably into ING's frontend ecosystem.

The ambition isn't simply to give engineers another AI assistant. The pilot is about experimenting with and building AI-powered engineering solutions that can actively contribute to the development lifecycle.

You don't need to be an AI specialist already, but you should have a genuine interest in AI and be excited about building with AI , rather than simply using tools such as Copilot.

About the team

You will be joining a small, senior engineering team working on a pilot initiative . The team consists of six experienced developers, with three working full-time and three part-time on the initiative.

Because this is an exploratory pilot, the role requires someone who is comfortable working hands-on, experimenting with new technologies and turning ideas into working engineering solutions.

The team works together at the ING office every Thursday , making Thursday office attendance part of the working arrangement.

Requirements

• 10+ years of software engineering experience , with a strong focus on frontend engineering.
  
• Hands-on experience with Web Components, preferably Lit/LitElement .
  
• Strong experience with the Node.js ecosystem .
  
• Experience with frontend architecture, shared libraries, design systems and/or frontend platform engineering.
  
• Experience with modern frontend build tooling such as Webpack, Rollup or equivalent tooling .
  
• Experience with SPA and SSR/SSG architectures , for example Next.js.
  
• Strong understanding of automated testing and engineering practices such as TDD/BDD .
  
• Experience with CI/CD and modern software delivery practices .
  
• Hands-on experience with AI-powered development, agentic workflows or AI agents, combined with a strong interest in applying AI to software engineering.
  
• A hands-on engineering mindset. You enjoy building, coding, testing and solving technical problems yourself .
  
• Strong technical communication skills and excellent English.
  
• Previous ING experience is a plus .

You will work on technology that supports engineers across ING, contribute to architectural decisions and help explore what an AI-enabled frontend engineering environment should look like.

What we offer

Here’s what you can expect:

• A contract until 30 April 2027 , with the possibility of extension.
  
• A salary range of € 5.177,70 - € 5.943,54 gross per month , based on 36 hours per week and depending on experience.
  
• Additional benefits, including holiday allowance, a 13th-month payment, and pension contribution .
  
• We are looking for someone who is available to start at short notice.
