Job description

At Lely, we develop technology that helps shape the future of sustainable dairy farming worldwide. Our robots operate around the clock and rely on robust, reliable software to perform at their best. That is why we continuously invest in further developing our Linux-based robotics platform: the foundation on which our robotic applications are built.

As a Senior Embedded Software Engineer (Linux), you will work at the heart of our robotic platforms. You will develop and improve Linux-based embedded systems that are essential to the performance, reliability, and scalability of our robots. Together with a multidisciplinary team of embedded software, electronics, and robotics engineers, you will work on technology that is used every day on farms around the world.

You combine technical depth with collaboration. Whether you are working on kernel configurations, supporting new hardware platforms, or improving software reliability, your work directly contributes to stable and future‑proof robotic solutions. At the same time, you play an active role in improving development practices and software quality within the team.

Your Main Responsibilities
  • Developing, maintaining, and improving our Linux-based embedded robotics platform, including kernel and user‑space components.
  • Configuring, integrating, and debugging Linux systems to further enhance reliability, performance, and security.
  • Supporting the integration of new hardware platforms, such as ARM and x86 architectures.
  • Collaborating closely with embedded software, electronics, and robotics engineers, as well as external development partners, to deliver effective technical solutions.
  • Contributing to software quality and development practices through knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and an Agile way of working.

You are an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and working on technology that is truly used in practice. You combine a strong technical foundation with curiosity and a collaborative mindset. You thrive in an environment where innovation, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement are encouraged.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Embedded Systems, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with Linux-based embedded systems and software development.
  • Experience with Linux kernel development, including configuring, building, and debugging kernels.
  • Knowledge of hardware architectures such as ARM and x86, and understanding of their impact on embedded software development.
  • Experience with programming and scripting languages such as C, C++, Python, Bash, or Makefiles, and an affinity for software quality and test‑driven development.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary Agile teams, with a structured, constructive, and collaborative approach.
Benefits
  • An international work environment that values collaboration, initiative, and diverse perspectives.
  • A culture that encourages learning, experimentation, and ownership of ideas.
  • Excellent employment conditions, including up to 8 weeks of vacation per year and a strong pension scheme.
  • A salary range of €5,800 – €8,300 gross per month, with clear opportunities for growth within the scale.
  • Full ownership of your own development, with access to a wide range of courses through the Lely Academy.
  • Daily access to outstanding sports facilities at the Lely Campus: an indoor gym, outdoor padel courts, basketball and volleyball courts, table tennis, and table football. You can join Hyrox workouts or sign up for personal training and challenge your colleagues during an active break.
  • Fresh coffee and tea from our own barista (with milk from our own farm) and a healthy, affordable company restaurant.
Work‑Life Balance
  • A healthy work‑life balance thanks to our hybrid working policy: you work at least three days a week on Campus, with flexible hours and plenty of opportunity to spend additional time onsite (between 06:00 and 20:00).
  • A free shuttle bus that takes you to and from the metro station in Maassluis, ensuring your workday starts and ends smoothly.
  • We love to celebrate! Whether it’s an anniversary or the annual Christmas party, Lely knows how to do it.
