Job summary

GitLab is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer for AI Engineering: Code Creation, focusing on Ruby and Python. You will architect and lead AI-powered coding assistance across services, develop scalable APIs, and mentor engineers in a distributed environment.

You will drive strategy for code suggestions, reviews, and generation, while evaluating new AI/ML models to boost tooling performance for developers worldwide.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in Ruby on Rails and Python in production systems.
• Experience leading complex AI-powered coding tools projects.

Responsibilities

• Architect and lead AI-powered coding tool implementations across services (Ruby/Rails, Python, Rust, TS).
• Drive technical strategy for AI coding tools incl. code suggestions, reviews, and generation.
• Design scalable APIs/services powering IDE extensions and workflows.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate across teams to improve quality and delivery.
• Evaluate new AI/ML models to enhance coding capabilities.
• Influence product and engineering decisions with iterative solutions.
• Collaborate with product, engineering, marketing, and customers.
