Job summary

Booking.com is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the AI Application Platform and intelligence products. You will define technical vision, architecture, and SDLC guidelines to scale AI capabilities across the Marketplace.

You will partner with product, data science, ML, and platform engineering to deliver highly scalable, resilient applications and services, guiding multiple teams and setting engineering standards in Amsterdam and beyond.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software development experience with at least 3 years in technical leadership.
• Proven track record delivering complex technical initiatives at scale.
• Hands-on production ML/AI systems experience from prototype to product.
• Experience with GenAI and foundation models in production contexts.
• Designing, building, and operating scalable distributed systems.
• Fluency across data and AI stack including data engineering and platform APIs.
• Strong communication skills and ability to influence stakeholders.
• Customer-focused mindset and risk-aware decision making.

Responsibilities

• Lead scoping and redesign of critical systems within the area, impacting customers and partners.
• Define patterns and standards for AI/ML capabilities across Marketplace.
• Drive the AI Application Platform's technical direction to accelerate product development.
• Translate ideas into concrete artifacts, scope, requirements, and guiding principles.
• Act as tech lead on cross-team projects and coordinate multiple engineering squads.
• Develop architectural guiding principles for aligned engineering teams.
• Hands-on PoCs and evaluation of new technologies when required.
• Guide implementation of strategic decisions across cross-functional teams.
• Collaborate with product, data science, ML, and platform engineering to deliver scalable services.
