Job summary

Elsevier in Amsterdam seeks a Principal Software Engineer to shape the technical direction of Libra, an AI-enabled evaluation platform. You will own frontend architecture, influence backend and integrations, and steer a distributed team toward robust, scalable software.

You will align with data scientists and evaluation teams, set design standards, and drive an AI-first engineering culture while delivering reliable, high‑performance services across multiple product lines.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 7 years building large web applications on the frontend.
• BS in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent experience; advanced degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Own frontend architecture and delivery across the product and contribute to backend and integrations decisions.
• Lead architectural design and ensure technical consistency across frontend, backend and integrations.
• Define coding standards, lead design reviews, code reviews and architecture sessions.
• Shape and design the backend-for-frontend service including API contracts, authentication and RBAC.
• Design extensible patterns for new evaluation types and partner integrations as the platform grows.
• Lead cross‑team implementation spanning multiple services and modules from development to infrastructure.
• Ensure platform reliability at scale with high performance for hundreds of concurrent users.
• Diagnose and resolve complex distributed-system issues and complete critical bug fixes.
• Model data to support operational and analytical use cases and collaborate with evaluation teams.
