Purpose Statement:
Responsible for leading the Test Engineering department as a key member of the site leadership team. Provides strategic direction to the team to achieve the enduring goals of the department, site, and region, with a specialized focus on mechanical assembly, electromechanical integration, System Integration and automated mechanical testing methodologies.
1. Best People
- Develop and mentor a high-performance, motivated team of mechanical test engineers, automation specialists, and test technicians.
- Build proactive capability in mechanical disciplines (e.g., mechanics of materials, kinematics, robotics) to support flawless execution of complex mechanical assemblies and drive continuous business growth.
- Establish training programs focused on geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), mechanical fixture design, and advanced measurement techniques.
2. Operational Excellence
- Lead and drive mechanical test-engineering excellence by collaborating with manufacturing, quality, and process engineering leads.
- Ensure test capabilities meet or exceed manufacturing standards by developing robust physical testing protocols (e.g., torque verification, leak/pressure testing, structural stress/strain analysis, thermal cycling, and dimensional validation using CMMs).
- Drive the automation of mechanical testing to reduce cycle times, eliminate ergonomic hazards, and improve the repeatability and reliability of quality inspections.
3. Customer Service Excellence
- Support Program Management initiatives by participating in customer design reviews and providing critical Design for Testability (DFT) and Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback specific to mechanical enclosures, moving parts, and structural components.
- Partner with customers during the New Product Introduction (NPI) phase to design and validate custom mechanical test fixtures and jigs, ensuring their physical product requirements are met seamlessly.
4. Compliance / Environment / Culture
- Lead test engineering activities in strict alignment with Plexus values and Leadership Behaviors.
- Ensure all mechanical testing processes and equipment comply with rigorous industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM, ASME ) and customer-specific regulatory requirements.
- Promote a strong culture of safety, particularly concerning the operation of heavy machinery, automated robotics, pneumatic/hydraulic presses, and high-tension testing equipment.
5. Resources Optimization / Cost Effectiveness
- Provide technical leadership for site operations by establishing a mechanical test technology roadmap.
- Manage the Capital Expenditure (CapEx) budget for the test department, evaluating and procuring advanced mechanical test equipment (e.g., optical comparators, tensile testers, vibration tables).
- Work closely with corporate and regional Regional Engineering to standardize mechanical testing platforms, optimize custom fixture lifecycle costs, and improve overall manufacturing return on investment (ROI).
Education & Experience Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering, or a closely related field is highly preferred.
- Experience: 15 or more years of related experience in a manufacturing environment, specifically within mechanical assembly, electromechanical systems, or heavy manufacturing.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
