Sr Lead Engineer / Staff - Mechanical Design
The Staff Engineer / Senior Lead Engineer – Mechanical Automation is responsible for leading the end-to-end design, development, and implementation of complex mechanical systems, automated modules, and custom machinery. Acting as a technical subject matter expert (SME), this role provides technical guidance to engineering teams, manages cross-functional alignment, and bridges design execution with shop-floor manufacturing and supply chain readiness.
Key Responsibilities
1. Technical Leadership & Strategic Architecture
- Lead the design, technical analysis, and deployment of automation solutions across multiple domains.
- Provide technical direction, mentorship, and review support to junior and peer engineering teams.
- Act as a recognized "go-to" technical expert for complex mechanical systems, 3D modelling, and engineering simulations.
- Drive site-wide deployment efforts and proactively promote industry best practices across the engineering lifecycle.
2. Mechanical Design & System Validation
- Create, modify, and optimize 3D models, assembly drawings, and detailed technical prints compliant with company procedures and industry standards.
- Perform mechanical engineering calculations, tolerance stack-ups, and FEA/simulations prior to finalizing designs.
- Integrate feedback from Design for Excellence (DFx) reviews—including Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Testability, Reliability, and Industrial Design.
- Test, validate, and qualify physical mechanical systems, making iterative adjustments based on empirical data and field testing.
3. Cross-Functional Collaboration & Customer Engagement
- Review, interpret, and negotiate technical requirements and specifications with clients and key stakeholders.
- Collaborate closely with Supply Chain, Quality, Operations, and Project Management to ensure high-quality product delivery.
- Manage relationships with key vendors, partners, and fabrication suppliers to support component sourcing and prototype builds.
- Deliver engineering prints, documentation, and design packages to production teams to support seamless manufacturing execution.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience: 6 to 8 years of experience in custom automation, machine design, or a closely related manufacturing industry.
- Technical Mastery: High proficiency in 3D CAD modelling, engineering calculations, mechanical simulation, and drawing generation (GD&T).
- Domain Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of manufacturing processes, automated assembly lines, material selection, and DFx methodologies.
- Project & Vendor Management: Demonstrated ability to participate in project planning, coordinate schedules, and interface directly with customers and vendors.
- Environment: Primarily office and engineering lab environment.
- Physical Tasks: Extended periods of computer work (CAD/data analysis) involving repetitive manual movements (mouse, keyboard).
- Travel: Occasional domestic or international travel may be required
