Job summary

Ambition is hiring a backend engineer to design, build, and operate cloud-native services using Java 17 and Spring Boot in a hybrid setup for a leading banking technology environment.

You will develop microservices, APIs, and secure architectures, deploy on Kubernetes, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, scalable banking solutions. Experience with AI-assisted tools is a plus.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, or related field.
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on backend development experience with Java 17 and Spring Boot.
• Experience designing and developing enterprise-grade microservices and RESTful APIs.
• Strong experience deploying and managing containerised applications using Kubernetes.
• Experience with cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools and integrating AI capabilities into workflows.

The Role

Design, build, deliver - here's what you'll be responsible for:

• Design, develop, and maintain high-performance backend services using Java 17 and Spring Boot within a cloud-native architecture
• Build scalable microservices and RESTful APIs that support enterprise banking applications with a strong focus on security, reliability, and performance
• Deploy, manage, and optimise applications on Kubernetes while contributing to containerisation and cloud-native engineering best practices
• Collaborate with Solution Architects, Business Analysts, Product Owners, and engineering teams to deliver secure, scalable, and resilient banking solutions
• Optimise application performance, troubleshoot production issues, and continuously improve system reliability and observability
• Implement secure coding standards, automated testing, and CI/CD practices to support high-quality software delivery
• Leverage AI-assisted development tools and modern AI technologies to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and software delivery processes

What We're Looking For

A technically strong, cloud-native backend engineering professional:

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline
• Minimum 5 years of hands-on backend development experience, with strong expertise in Java 17 and Spring Boot
• Proven experience designing and developing enterprise-grade microservices and RESTful APIs
• Strong experience deploying and managing containerised applications using Kubernetes
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, Git, and modern DevOps practices
• Solid understanding of relational and NoSQL databases, application performance tuning, and distributed systems
• Experience working within cloud environments such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud is highly desirable
• Knowledge of enterprise integration, messaging technologies, and event-driven architecture is an advantage
• Experience working in the banking or financial services industry with an understanding of secure, regulated application development
• Hands-on experience using AI-assistant development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar, with exposure to integrating AI capabilities into software engineering workflows
• Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively in Agile delivery teams
