Job summary

ONL Biz Solutions Sdn Bhd in Kuala Lumpur is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer who enjoys designing reliable systems, solving complex problems, and making thoughtful architectural decisions. You will design, build, and scale backend services and APIs, define service boundaries, optimize performance, and mentor other engineers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of production backend design and maintenance.
• Strong fundamentals regardless of language/framework.
• Experience with RESTful APIs and service communication patterns.
• Good understanding of relational databases, indexing, transactions.
• Experience with caching, queues, background processing and async work.
• Knowledge of distributed systems concepts like consistency and fault tolerance.
• Experience with microservices or SOA architectures.
• Familiarity with cloud-based environments and observability.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high‑performance backend systems.
• Evolve backend architectures as product and traffic grow.

We're looking for a Senior Backend Engineer who enjoys designing reliable systems, solving complex technical problems, and making thoughtful architectural decisions. This role is ideal for an engineer with strong backend fundamentals who thinks beyond any particular programming language or framework. While hands‑on experience with modern backend technologies is important, we're less concerned with whether you've worked primarily with .NET, Node.js, PHP, or another ecosystem, and more interested in your ability to design maintainable systems, understand engineering trade‑offs, and adapt to the right technology for the problem.

What You'll Do

Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and high‑performance backend systems.

Design backend architectures that can evolve as product requirements and traffic grow.

Build well‑structured services, APIs, shared libraries, and reusable backend components.

Make architectural decisions around service boundaries, data ownership, caching, persistence, and communication patterns.

Translate business requirements into practical technical architecture.

Identify performance bottlenecks and improve application, API, and database performance.

Evaluate technologies, frameworks, databases, and architectural approaches based on engineering trade‑offs rather than trends.

Define engineering standards and patterns that improve consistency, maintainability, and reliability.

Mentor other engineers through technical discussions, debugging, design reviews, and knowledge sharing.

What We're Looking For

5+ years of experience designing and maintaining production‑grade backend systems.

Strong software engineering fundamentals independent of any specific programming language or framework.

Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend language or ecosystem such as C#, TypeScript/Node.js, PHP, or similar.

Demonstrated ability to learn and become productive with unfamiliar technologies when needed.

Strong understanding of API design, including RESTful APIs and service communication patterns.

Strong understanding of relational databases, data modeling, indexing, transactions, locking, and query optimization.

Experience with caching, queues, background processing, and asynchronous workflows.

Good understanding of distributed systems concepts such as consistency, concurrency, idempotency, and fault tolerance.

Experience designing or contributing to microservices or service‑oriented architectures.

Familiarity with cloud‑based application environments.

Good understanding of logging, monitoring, and observability from an application perspective.

Nice to Have

Experience designing high‑throughput or high‑concurrency systems.

Experience with event‑driven architectures and message brokers such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, NATS, or similar technologies.

Experience with Redis or other distributed caching technologies.

Experience with object storage such as Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, Google Cloud Storage, or similar technologies.

Experience with containerization technology and CI/CD pipelines.

Exposure to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

Experience with distributed tracing and application observability tools.
