Job summary

ZW Packaging in Malaysia seeks a Mandarin-speaking Product Sales Engineer with strong CAD/design capability to translate customer requirements into practical packaging solutions. You will liaise with customers and internal teams from concept through sample development to production.

The role emphasizes SolidWorks/AutoCAD proficiency, DXF output, and collaboration across Sales, Production, and QA/QC to deliver quality packaging designs that meet ISO standards.

Qualifications

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES

1. Customer Technical Consultation

• Discuss and analyse customer requirements relating to packaging design, including structure, shape, dimensions, materials, load requirements, protection requirements, and functional needs.
• Provide technical advice and recommendations based on product requirements, design feasibility, material suitability, and manufacturing capability.
• Translate customer requirements into suitable technical design solutions.
• Act as the main technical liaison between customers and internal departments on packaging design matters.
• Attend customer meetings, site visits, technical discussions, and fitting trials when required.

2. Packaging Design & Engineering

• Develop conceptual and detailed packaging designs using SolidWorks, AutoCAD and other relevant CAD software.
• Prepare 2D drawings, 3D models, layouts, and technical drawings according to customer requirements.
• Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, engineering requirements, manufacturing capability, and internal standards.
• Select suitable packaging materials and components based on application and customer requirements.
• Review existing designs and recommend improvements for functionality, protection, manufacturability, and cost effectiveness.
• Revise designs based on customer feedback, fitting test results, production feedback, or internal review.

3. Sample Preparation & DXF Generation

• Generate accurate DXF files for sample cutting using plotter machines, sample tables, or other cutting equipment.
• Prepare technical drawings and cutting data required for sample production.
• Coordinate with Production / Sample Making / Engineering teams to ensure accurate conversion from design to physical sample.
• Verify sample dimensions, structure, and specifications before submission to customers.
• Ensure physical samples accurately reflect the approved design.

4. Sample Testing & Design Revision

• Coordinate and support packaging sample fitting and testing activities.
• Conduct or assist with dimensional, fitting, functional, and application testing where required.
• Review testing results and identify design issues or improvement opportunities.
• Obtain customer feedback and coordinate necessary design modifications.
• Manage design revision cycles until customer approval / buy-off is obtained.
• Maintain proper revision control to prevent the use of obsolete drawings or designs.

5. Sales & Project Support

• Support the Sales team in preparing technical proposals, quotations, presentations, samples, and customer submissions.
• Provide technical information and design recommendations during the quotation and project development stages.
• Review customer drawings, specifications, and technical requirements.
• Assist Sales in responding to customer technical enquiries.
• Coordinate with Production, QA/QC, Purchasing, Warehouse, and other departments to ensure successful project execution.
• Monitor project progress from initial design through sample approval and production handover.

6. Documentation & ISO Compliance

• Maintain controlled documentation for drawings, CAD files, DXF files, samples, specifications, revisions, and customer approvals.
• Ensure proper document identification, revision numbering, approval, and filing.
• Comply with applicable ISO Quality Management System (QMS) and Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements.
• Support internal and external audits when required.
• Ensure all design and technical records are maintained accurately and confidentially.

7. Continuous Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve packaging design, production efficiency, material utilisation, product quality and cost effectiveness.
• Participate in design improvement and problem-solving activities.
• Provide technical input for new product development and existing product improvement.
• Keep updated on relevant packaging materials, design technology, CAD software, and industry practices.

8. Others

• Attend to other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the superior or Management.
• Perform work in accordance with Company policies, procedures, safety requirements, and ISO standards.

JOB REQUIREMENTS / COMPETENCY

Education / Qualification

• Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, Industrial Design, Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related discipline.
• Candidates with relevant technical experience in packaging design may also be considered.

Working Experience

• Minimum 3 years of relevant working experience in packaging design, product engineering, technical sales, manufacturing, or a related discipline.
• Experience in industrial packaging, paper packaging, wooden packaging, crates, pallets, or protective packaging will be an added advantage.
• Experience dealing directly with customers on technical requirements and product development is preferred.

Technical Skills / Software

Candidates should have practical working knowledge of:

• SolidWorks – 3D modelling, assembly and technical drawing
• AutoCAD – 2D drafting and technical drawings
• DXF file generation for sample cutting / CNC / plotter applications
• Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint
• Reading and interpreting technical drawings
• Basic understanding of material selection and manufacturing processes
• Basic understanding of packaging structure, dimensions, fitting, and functionality
• Knowledge of sample cutting / plotter or sample table operations will be an advantage

Quality / Management System

• Knowledge of ISO 9001 – Quality Management System (QMS).
• Knowledge of ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System (EMS).
• Understanding of document control, drawing revision control, customer approval, and quality requirements.
• Knowledge of 5S / continuous improvement will be an advantage.

Language Requirements

Mandarin speaking is strongly preferred.

• Able to speak and communicate effectively in Mandarin and English.
• Able to read and write in Mandarin, Bahasa Malaysia and English.
• Mandarin is required / strongly preferred due to customer and business communication requirements.
