Job summary

National Instruments, now part of Emerson’s Test & Measurement group, seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer for its R&D team in Malaysia. You will sustain and enhance released hardware products, ensure reliability and manufacturability, and drive improvements across functions to meet customer needs.

You will lead mechanical design activities, conduct analyses, and collaborate with Quality, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to resolve issues and support ECOs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 2+ years of relevant working experience.
• Proven experience in mechanical design and product development for electronics hardware or related fields.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials selection, and manufacturing processes.
• Experience performing root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical engineering activities for multiple released products, including root-cause investigations, corrective actions, and design improvements.
• Design, maintain, and optimize electronics packaging solutions, including enclosures, assemblies, internal components, and accessories.
• Conduct mechanical, thermal, and tolerance analyses to ensure product robustness, performance, and long-term reliability.
• Partner with Quality, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, and Operations teams to resolve production, field, and supplier-related issues.
• Develop and maintain material, component, and manufacturing specifications; support ECOs and product lifecycle updates.
• Drive cost, quality, and manufacturability improvements through data-driven engineering solutions.
• Support supplier qualification and risk mitigation activities, including alternate sourcing, material substitutions, and component lifecycle management.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to peers while contributing to engineering best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
• 2 years of relevant working experience and above
• Proven experience in mechanical design and product development, ideally within electronics hardware, instrumentation, industrial products, or sustaining engineering environments.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials selection, and manufacturing processes.
• Demonstrated ability to investigate technical issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement effective corrective actions.
• Experience managing multiple priorities and delivering results in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate in a global engineering organization.

Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart

• Experience with 3D CAD and CAE tools such as Creo, SolidWorks, or equivalent platforms.
• Hands‑on experience in thermal analysis, thermal testing, and mechanical validation.
• Knowledge of sheet metal, machined, cast, and injection‑molded plastic component design and associated manufacturing processes.
• Experience supporting high‑mix, low‑volume products and sustaining engineering activities.
• Familiarity with supplier qualification, manufacturing transfers, material changes, and production support.
• Working knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and reliability engineering principles.
