Job summary

Job Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for providing technical engineering support, planning, coordination, supervision, and implementation of mechanical works throughout the project lifecycle. The role involves ensuring that mechanical installations are carried out according to approved drawings, specifications, applicable standards, project requirements, quality standards, and safety regulations.

The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with consultants, contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, project management teams, and other engineering disciplines to ensure timely and successful completion of mechanical works.

Key Responsibilities

1. Engineering & Technical Responsibilities

Review mechanical drawings, specifications, scope of works, technical documents, and project requirements.

Prepare and review mechanical engineering calculations, layouts, technical submissions, and design proposals.

Ensure mechanical systems are designed and installed in accordance with approved drawings and specifications.

Review and prepare shop drawings, material submissions, method statements, and technical submissions.

Identify technical issues, discrepancies, clashes, and design conflicts and recommend appropriate solutions.

Coordinate mechanical designs with architectural, structural, electrical, civil, and other M&E services.

Provide technical clarification and engineering support to the construction team.

Resolving site technical problems and provide practical engineering solutions.

Ensure all mechanical works comply with applicable Malaysian standards, regulations, codes, and project specifications.

2. Site & Construction Responsibilities

Monitor and supervise mechanical installation works at site.

Ensure works are executed according to approved drawings, method statements, specifications, and project schedules.

Conduct regular site inspections to verify workmanship and installation quality.

Monitor progress of mechanical works and identify potential delays.

Coordinate with subcontractors and specialist contractors to ensure smooth execution.

Verify dimensions, levels, equipment locations, pipe routes, duct routes, and other mechanical installation requirements.

Ensure proper installation of mechanical equipment and systems.

Attend site meetings, coordination meetings, technical meetings, and progress meetings.

Assist the project team in resolving site coordination and construction issues.

Coordinate installation activities and progress with other trades (CSA and MEP) to prevent clashes and delays.

3. Mechanical Systems

Depending on project requirements, oversee and coordinate systems such as:

HVAC systems.

Chilled water systems.

Mechanical ventilation.

Air-conditioning systems.

Plumbing and sanitary systems.

Pumps and water supply systems.

Drainage systems.

Compressed air systems.

Mechanical equipment and machinery.

Building management and control interfaces.

Other mechanical services specified under the project.

4. Quality Control

Ensure mechanical installations meet project quality requirements.

Conduct inspections and coordinate inspection requests.

Review inspection and test plans.

Monitor testing and commissioning activities.

Identify defective or non-compliant works and coordinate rectification.

Ensure proper documentation of inspection, testing, and commissioning activities.

Assist in preparing quality records, checklists, test reports, and handover documents.

5. Project Planning & Coordination

Preparing mechanical work schedules and installation programmes (MS Excel or Ms Project).

Monitor daily and weekly progress against planned targets.

Coordinate manpower, materials, equipment, and subcontractor requirements.

Identify potential project risks and technical constraints.

Preparing progress reports.

Coordinate procurement and delivery of mechanical materials and equipment.

Ensure materials are available according to the construction programme.

Coordinate testing and commissioning of mechanical systems.

Witness testing with consultants, clients, authorities, and relevant parties.

Ensure testing and commissioning records are properly maintained.

Troubleshooting mechanical system performance issues.

Coordinate rectification of defects identified during testing and commissioning.

Preparing as-built drawings, operation manuals, warranties, and handover documentation.

7. Health, Safety & Environmental Responsibilities

Ensure mechanical works comply with project HSE requirements.

Follow applicable Malaysian occupational safety and health requirements.

Ensure safe work practices are implemented on site.

Participate in toolbox meetings, safety inspections, and risk assessments.

Report unsafe conditions, incidents, and potential hazards.

Ensure subcontractors comply with site safety requirements.

Attend technical, site and coordination meetings as required.

Coordinate and discuss assigned technical and site matters with Clients, Consultants and relevant parties.

Provide timely updates and responses on assigned matters.

Promptly report and elevate key issues to the Construction Manager / Project Manager to avoid delay or misunderstanding.

Ensure timely response and communication (email, letter and etc) with Clients, Consultants, Stakeholder and relevant parties to protect the Company’s interests.

Qualifications & Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

Recognised engineering qualification in Malaysia.

Registration with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) will be an advantage.

Relevant experience in construction, M&E, building services, industrial, or infrastructure projects.

Knowledge of mechanical systems, construction practices, testing, and commissioning.

Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.

Familiarity with AutoCAD and relevant engineering/design software.

Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Knowledge of Malaysian standards, regulations, and authority requirements.

Good communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.

Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

Willing to travel or work at project sites when required.

Preferred Experience

Experience in high-rise, commercial, industrial, data centre, manufacturing, infrastructure, or other large-scale projects.

Experience coordinating mechanical subcontractors and consultants.

Experience with testing and commissioning.

Experience preparing technical submissions and method statements.

Experience dealing with consultants, clients, authorities, and contractors.
