Job summary

Jora Malaysia is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design and development of new products from concept to production at our Penang R&D site. You will oversee feasibility studies, risk assessments, prototyping, verification, validation, and release to manufacturing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, 8+ years in mechanical design/product development in R&D.
• Proven leadership of small teams (2–3 engineers) and project mentoring.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
• Experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, material selection and manufacturing processes.
• Exposure to semiconductor equipment, precision mechanisms, thermal management, optical systems, sheet metal design.
• Familiarity with engineering simulation tools (FEA, CFD, optical simulation) is an advantage.
• Excellent problem solving, analytical, communication, and independent work capability.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of new products from concept through production.
• Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, prototyping, verification, validation, and production release.
• Design precision mechanical systems including sheet metal chassis, precision mechanisms, and automation systems.
• Perform design calculations, tolerance stack-ups, component sizing, and structural analysis.
• Lead a team of 2–3 Mechanical Design Engineers, conduct design reviews and provide mentorship.
• Drive DFx (DFM, DFA, DFR, DFC) and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability.
• Prepare engineering documentation and adopt AI-assisted workflows for productivity.

• Lead the mechanical design and development of new products from concept through production.
• Conduct feasibility studies, risk assessments, prototyping, verification, validation, and production release.
• Design precision mechanical systems including:
• Sheet metal chassis

• Perform engineering calculations including tolerance stack-up, component sizing, structural analysis, and design optimization.

Engineering Leadership

• Lead a team of approximately 2-3 Mechanical Design Engineers.
• Conduct design reviews and provide technical guidance and mentorship.
• Promote engineering best practices and continuous technical improvement.
• Plan engineering activities and ensure timely project delivery.

Product Validation & Problem Solving

• Plan and execute verification, validation, reliability, and characterization testing.
• Perform root cause analysis for design and manufacturing issues.
• Implement corrective and preventive actions to improve product quality and reliability.
• Drive continuous product improvement throughout the product lifecycle.

Design for Manufacturing

• Drive Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), Design for Reliability (DFR), and Design for Cost (DFC).
• Optimize product performance, manufacturability, quality, and BOM cost.
• Support production ramp-up and engineering change implementation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with:
• Project Management
• Hardware Engineering
• Software Engineering
• Manufacturing
• Quality
• Supply Chain
• External suppliers and partners
• Prepare and maintain engineering documentation including drawings, specifications, reports, test plans, and Engineering Change Orders (ECO).
• Adopt new engineering technologies, simulation tools, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.
• Improve engineering processes and product development methodologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or above in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 8 years of Mechanical Design or Product Development experience within an R&D environment.
• Previous experience leading engineering projects and mentoring a small team.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software.
• Strong knowledge of:
• Precision Mechanical Design
• GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
• Tolerance Analysis
• Material Selection
• Manufacturing Processes
• Experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Semiconductor Equipment
• Precision Mechanisms
• Thermal Management

• Sheet Metal & Chassis Design
• Experience with engineering simulation tools (FEA, CFD, Optical Simulation) is an added advantage.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis skills.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.
• Able to work independently in a fast-paced R&D environment.
• Experience using AI tools to improve engineering productivity is an added advantage.
