Responsible for leading the technical and engineering activities of assigned projects, from review of customer design inputs through technical clarification, DFMA, manufacturing engineering development and controlled release of manufacturing information. The role serves as the primary technical focal point between the customer/project team and internal functions including Fabrication, Production, Assembly, Supply Chain and Quality, with strong emphasis on structural steel, welded fabrication, manufacturability and SolidWorks.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- 1. Lead the review of customer drawings, specifications, technical requirements and design inputs to establish technical and manufacturing requirements.
- 2. Lead technical clarification with customers and internal stakeholders, including preparation, coordination and closure of RFIs and other engineering queries.
- 3. Perform and lead Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) reviews to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, cost-effective and suitable for available manufacturing processes.
- 4. Review structural steel designs, fabricated assemblies, welded connections and manufacturing details for manufacturability, structural intent, tolerances, interfaces and fabrication requirements.
- 5. Provide technical guidance on welding and fabrication requirements, including joint configuration, weld details, welding symbols, fabrication sequence, distortion considerations and practical fabrication constraints.
- 6. Lead the development, review and approval of 3D models, manufacturing drawings, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings and detailed production information using SolidWorks.
- 7. Ensure accurate and timely preparation and release of Manufacturing BOMs (MBOM), manufacturing drawings and manufacturing programs/data required by downstream functions.
- 8. Own the completeness and timely release of the Manufacturing Release Package, ensuring manufacturing receives correct and controlled technical information by the required need date.
- 9. Establish and maintain technical configuration and revision control, ensuring approved customer changes, technical clarifications and Change Control requirements are correctly incorporated before release to manufacturing.
- 10. Assess the technical impact of proposed changes and provide input to the formal Change Control process covering technical feasibility, material, fabrication, manufacturing and downstream implications.
- 11. Work closely with Fabrication Engineering and the Fabrication Lead on fabrication methods, welding requirements, jigs/fixtures, tolerances, technical constraints and manufacturing improvement.
- 12. Provide technical support to HQ Production and Assembly for drawing interpretation, manufacturing issues, fitment/interface problems and engineering-related production constraints.
- 13. Coordinate with Supply Chain on technical specifications, material requirements, approved substitutions and technical clarification of procured items.
- 14. Coordinate with Quality on technical acceptance criteria, drawing/specification requirements, FAI/validation, NCR technical disposition and root-cause/corrective-action activities where engineering input is required.
- 15. Support prototype, first-build and First Article Inspection (FAI) activities and ensure approved findings are incorporated into subsequent production releases.
- 16. Lead technical problem-solving and root-cause analysis for design/manufacturing issues, ensuring permanent corrective actions are incorporated into engineering standards where appropriate.
- 17. Drive engineering continuous improvement and standardization, including standard designs, drawing practices, fabrication details, reusable models/components, lessons learned and DFMA standards.
- 18. Monitor and report technical/design QCD performance including Manufacturing Release Package OTD, Drawing/MBOM/Program OTD, engineering FPY/design escapes and engineering-related rework.
- 19. Lead, guide and develop Mechanical Designers and other technical personnel, including work allocation, technical review and verification of engineering deliverables.
- 20. Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with applicable customer requirements, drawings, specifications, engineering standards, company procedures and document-control requirements.
