Job summary

upscale in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, seeks an experienced lawyer to join our team. You will negotiate and draft commercial contracts, refine internal policies, and manage a global IP portfolio across multiple jurisdictions.

Ideal candidates have at least 2 years PQE, are called to the Malaysian Bar, and fluent in English, Malay and Mandarin to review Chinese regulations and liaise with stakeholders. Immediate joiner preferred.

Qualifications

  • Requires LL.B with commendable academic results from a reputable university.
  • Called to the Malaysian Bar is mandatory.
  • Minimum 2 years of PQE in either a law firm or corporate setting.
  • Prior experience in litigation and corporate matters is required.
  • Proficient in English, Malay and Mandarin; Mandarin proficiency is essential for regulatory review and stakeholder communication.

Responsibilities

  • Negotiate and draft commercial contracts, policies, and legal documents across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Shape internal governance by creating and refining policies, memos, and regulatory reports.
  • Manage the global intellectual property portfolio and safeguard trademarks and brand assets.
  • Lead legal due diligence for international expansions, joint ventures, and strategic projects.
  • Track regulatory changes and advise updates to keep the business agile and compliant.
  • Support diverse legal matters including corporate, commercial, litigation, and cross-border transactions.
  • Collaborate with external counsel and business partners to align legal strategy with operational goals.
  • Advise business units across real estate, PropTech, hospitality, valuation, and design to ensure legal clarity and sector compliance.
  • Contribute to special projects and ad-hoc legal initiatives with initiative and insight.

Job description

  • Minimum 2 years of Post-Qualified Experience in either a law firm or corporate setting.
  • Prior experience in litigation and corporate matters is required.
  • Proficient in written and spoken English, Malay and Mandarin.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin is essential for reviewing and analysing Chinese regulations and laws, as well as communicating with local stakeholders.
  • Strong critical thinking skills to assess fact situations, identify legal issues, analyse, understand, and apply relevant statutes and regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently and part of a team.
  • Excel at solving complex, multi-faceted problems, demonstrating sound judgment in risk assessment and the ability to present informed solutions in a manner that balances business goals and peoples needs.
  • Immediate joiner/1 month notice period
  • Preferably Chinese female
  • Not from MMU University as their practice does not fit
